Despite playing a very bad cannibal on the now-canceled NBC drama Hannibal, star Mads Mikkelsen insists that he is not bringing his evil presence to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The actor recently confirmed to ekstarbladet.dk that he is not playing the villain in this first Star Wars spinoff. Who he is playing is a question for another time. The actor is not yet ready to divulge this information. He stated the following.

"No, my character is actually not a bad guy, and then I can not say more."

When it comes to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we've had to piece details together from various rumors and other spy reports. The movie is based on the first paragraph of the opening crawl seen in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. The movie will take place during a period of Civil War. And it will focus on the Rebel's first major victory against the Galactic Empire after a surprise attack from a hidden base. It's during this sneak raid that a team of Rebel spies manage to steal the secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon: The dreaded Death Star! And it will end right where the original 1977 Star Wars picks up, with Princess Leia racing home aboard her starship hoping to restore freedom to the galaxy. Before she is captured by Lord Vader.

Back in September, Rogue One star Mads Mikkelsen signed an autograph for a fan, revealing that his name is Galen in this new adventure. Many fans have speculated that he could be Galen Marek from the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed video game. This character was the secret apprentice to Darth Vader, who went on to become instrumental in the formation of the Rebel Alliance, after uniting several of the Empire's enemies. While we still don't know for sure if Mads Mikkelsen is playing Galen Marek or not, further details seemed to point to this being at least partially true.

The character has been described as a scientist by insiders working for Lucasfilm. He is said to have taken over the Geonosian Death Star project, solving several of the space station's key flaws. He is revered by the Empire, getting compared to Robert Oppenheimer, who helped design the atomic bomb and later felt remorse for the death and destruction he helped create. Mads Mikkelsen's character reportedly flees from the Empire, and tries to "make things right," by enlisting the help of his only daughter, played by Felicity Jones. Which, if true, makes him a bad guy-turned-good guy. Further in Mads Mikkelsen's short interview, he calls his character 'vital' and 'important' to the story.

Felicity Jones' character is rumored to be "undoing the devastation" her family has created in the galaxy. It was earlier rumored that her character was a bounty hunter, but that may not be true, given her connection to this scientist. There have been reports that the actress' character may be named Lyla Erso. More recent reports claim her name is Jyn, a name that has appeared in previous Star Wars publications. Jyn Obah, Jyn N'oram and Jyn Odan are all characters that have been introduced in the Legends canon. And it seems to be a common name in the Star Wars universe. If Felicity Jones' character is, in fact, called Jyn, she will be the first and only Jyn to appear in the official Star Wars canon.

It has not yet been announced when the first Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer will debut. But we're sure to get our first look at Mads Mikkelsen and Felicity Jones' characters at that time. It isn't known if an official character rundown or plot synopsis will be released by Disney and LucasFilm before then. Though, it certainly sounds like we'll be getting plenty of interesting new characters when the movie hits theaters this December.
