According to Variety, Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to star in and Marcus Nispel will helm vidgame adaptation Alice for Universal Pictures.

Based on a twisted take of the Lewis Carroll classic, project was originally developed at Dimension.

The fractured fairy tale, adapted by Erich and Jon Hoeber, picks up Alice after her home has been destroyed and her family killed. The sole survivor of the disaster, she returns to a dark and threatening Wonderland where she must confront her fears before returning to her normal life.

The pic is being produced by Julie Yorn of Firm Films and Scott Faye of Collision Entertainment. Abandon Entertainment's Karen Lauder and Firm Films' JoAnne Colonna will exec produce.

Vidgame was originally created by American McGee for Electronic Arts.

Film rights were first acquired by Collision during its joint venture with Dimension. In the settlement ending the pact, shingle got the Alice rights to shop to other studios.

Gellar, who starred in horror hit The Grudge, most recently wrapped on an untitled psychological thriller for Rogue Pictures, the genre arm of U's Focus Features. In July she's due to lense Southland Tales for Warner Independent Pictures with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Seann William Scott.

In fall she will go into production on the adaptation of Melissa Bank's bestselling tome The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing, also for Warner Independent. Marc Klein, who penned the script, will make his helming debut on the pic.

Nispel helmed New Line's remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
