Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian sitcom created by the father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy. The series follows the Rose family — Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O’Hara), David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) as they lose all their wealth and have their lives flipped entirely upside down. The show premiered in 2015 and ran for six seasons until 2020, with 80 total episodes. Schitt’s Creek’s arrival on Netflix helped catapult its popularity, and it’s still wildly popular today. Schitt’s Creek is full of hilarious characters and one-liners and perfectly blends comedy and heartwarming moments. The entire series is enjoyable and certainly a must-watch. There isn’t really a bad season or even a bad episode. That said, here are all six seasons ranked.
6 Season 2
It often happens that the second season of a show has a hard time living up to the first and sometimes just ends up feeling like a transition season. That's essentially what the vibe of Schitt's Creek's second season is. After meeting most of the characters in the first season and getting a feel for what the show is about, the expectation is likely for the second season to really take off. However, during the bulk of season two it feels like the show is still trying to figure out where it wants to go and there's a lot of filler.
That said, season two isn't all bad. There are a lot of funny, iconic moments like when David and Moira make enchiladas together and decipher the cryptic "fold in the cheese" direction. The season also wraps up neatly, which sets season three up for success.
5 Season 1
Much of season one is what you get with most shows in their beginning, where you're setting the stage for the following seasons, getting to know the characters, and establishing a set and setting. While there are elements of Schitt's Creek that are reminiscent of other sitcoms, it's simultaneously so unique that it took a while to get itself going. The cast of characters is very strong, but very wacky, and the general riches-to-rags plot line took a second to get into. But once the show got its footing, it was fantastic.
The following seasons of Schitt's Creek are so good that it's really easy to overlook the first two seasons. Neither are bad, but once the introductions and formalities were out of the way, the show truly started to shine.
4 Season 3
Following the first two seasons, season three was a real turning point for the show. The Rose family — though they'll never admit it — are starting to settle into their new lives. David starts a business, Alexis goes back to school, and Johnny and Moira start investing themselves in the motel. Season three also introduced David's future husband Patrick (Noah Reid) to the cast. Season three is good. The characters are settled in and each person has their own story arc to follow. Plus, one of the highlights of the entire show is David's relationship with Patrick and the start of it in season three is a real sweet spot for the series.
3 Season 6
Even though there was likely no one who wanted it to end, Schitt's Creek did the series ending right. Following five seasons of ups and downs and loads of character development, the Roses are all setting off on their own journeys and seeing some of their dreams come true. It's an emotional moment because you've likely found yourself rooting for these characters for quite some time now. Season six also saw David and Patrick's highly anticipated wedding, complete with Moira dressed as the pope.
Schitt's Creek really is a prime example of a show that continued to improve upon itself after each season. By the sixth, you're attached to the characters and are happy to see them all living out their dreams and moving onto the next phase of their lives, but you also really hate to see them leave.
2 Season 5
Season five is a very character-driven season and full of energy. This season sees all the characters start to round out their development and begin to set the stage for the final season. There's Stevie's (Emily Hampshire) performance in Cabaret, Patrick's proposal to David, Moira films "The Crowening" in Bosnia, and, of course, Alexis performs "A Little Bit Alexis." There's so much to love about season five, especially if the happenings of each individual character is your favorite aspect of the show. The fifth season combines the heart of season six, with the laughs and fun of season four, resulting in a perfect blend that really showcases what makes Schitt's Creek such a good show.
1 Season 4
Schitt's Creek is at its peak during season four. The well-loved character development and full-circle storylines from the fifth and sixth seasons really blossom and grow during this season. Patrick and David officially label their relationship, Alexis has to figure out her feelings for Ted, Stevie and Johnny become business partners at the motel, and Moira deals with rumors that she died. There's a lot happening, but it's all so fun to watch and peppered with genuinely funny moments — and heartwarming ones, like Patrick's open-mic night performance of "Simply the Best" for David.
Despite there being so many storylines running at once, it's done with expert flair. There's room for all the characters to shine and touch on how they're growing ahead of the final two seasons. Plus, there's still plenty of that signature Schitt's Creek humor, making the fourth season the show's strongest by far.
