The Scream franchise will leave Woodsboro and move to New York City for the upcoming sequel, according to Bloody Disgusting. As per a new report, Ghostface will take Manhattan in Scream 6, with the site confirming that various sources claiming the franchise will shift to the Big Apple are indeed accurate.

The change of setting for Scream 6 tracks with what has already been revealed about the slasher sequel, with recent details stating that the project “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” While Woodsboro is almost as integral to the franchise as the Ghostface killer is, this will not be the first time that the horror franchise has moved events away from the small Californian town.

Scream 6 will see Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding return to reprise their roles from this year’s Scream outing. Following their experience with the infamous slasher in Scream 5, you can’t really blame them for wanting to leave the horrors of Woodsboro behind. Though sadly, it doesn’t sound like putting down roots in New York City will fare any better.

Scream Staple Neve Campbell Will Not Follow the Franchise to the Big Apple

Despite being the main player of the Scream franchise since the slasher series’ humble beginnings, Neve Campbell has confirmed that she will not return for Scream 6. The actress herself confirmed the disappointing news recently, citing an insufficient offer from the studio as being the reason why she will not follow Ghostface and the gang to the Big Apple.

“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film," Campbell said. “As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years," she added.

Though Neve Campbell will sadly not be back, Scream 6 will see Courteney Cox return for more. Not only that, Hayden Panettiere will also return as her Scream 4 character Kirby Reed. Courteney Cox has since heaped praise on the script for Scream 6 saying, "I don't know about contracts and where things are, but I'll tell you in the script — it's a really good one. You actually have to be killed if you talk about it, so I'm not gonna say anything."

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (who are known collectively as Radio Silence), written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, and Dermot Mulroney, Scream 6 is scheduled to be released on March 31, 2023.
