How loud are a dozen fan boys complaining about an actress in the feedback section of a movie site? Pretty loud, it turns out. It was reported earlier today that Mary Jane Watson was being bumped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with the iconic Marvel character to debut in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 instead.
At the time this was confirmed, Shailene Woodley was expected to reprise her role as Mary Jane in the third chapter of this particular Spider-Man saga, coming to theaters in 2016. Now, it's looking like the role will be recast. When the first set photos of Shailene appeared on the Internet, comic book fanatics flocked to their resident comment sections to scream how wrong and unattractive she was for the part. It seems that producers may have listened to the multitude of complaints, changing her out under the guise that its better for the sequel and makes more sense for the recently announced The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4.
Nothing has been confirmed at this time, with those close to the production saying the actress is likely to be recast only because of her role in Divergent, now in production. If this adaptation of the YA novel is a hit, a sequel will move forward fast, leaving the actress no time to return as Mary Jane.
Director Marc Webb gave this statement.
"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress, and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."
Shailene Woodley only worked a total of three days on three different scenes. Those scenes are likely going to end up on the Blu-ray when its released next year, but its highly doubtful they will ever be used in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. There is no doubt that you, reading this right now, helped land Shailene Woodley on the cutting room floor. That said, who do you think should replace Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 3 if she doesn't return? Alison Brie? Brie Larson? Quvenzhané Wallis? We here thought Shailene Woodley was a perfect casting choice for this particular iteration of the Spider-Man mythos.
