The Jeffersons star Sherman Hemsley passed away earlier today in his El Paso, Texas home, at the age of 74. No official cause of death has been released, although sources indicate the actor passed from natural causes.

Sherman Hemsley made his acting debut as George Jefferson on the hit sitcom All in the Family in 1973. He appeared in a handful of episodes through 1975, when CBS launched the spin-off series The Jeffersons. The popular show ran 11 seasons from 1975 to 1985, spanning 253 episodes.

He then moved to another hit series, Amen, from 1986 to 1991, portraying Deacon Ernest Frye. He also voiced B.P. Richfield in the innovative animatronic series Dinosaurs. The actor was last seen in a guest-starring spot on the TBS series House of Payne last year, where he reprised his famous George Jefferson role.

The actor was not married and had no children at the time of his death. He was also an accomplished singer, releasing the single "Ain't that A Kick in the Head" in 1989.
