According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shrek 2 sold a record 11 million DVDs during its first three days in release over the weekend for a combined DVD and VHS sales total of 12.1 million units, earning about $185 million in gross consumer spending, according to DreamWorks executives.

Home videos are typically released Tuesdays, but DreamWorks led the way for Friday home video releases with the original Shrek release, which sold more than 7 million DVD units during its first three days in release. While sequels generally perform better than the original release -- theatrically and on home video -- the 73% jump from 7 million to 12 million units sold during the same three-day frame is impressive, according to several industry observers.

"That certainly is an inordinately large jump in sequel performance for home video," analyst Tom Adams said.
