Disney movies have always been the ideal source of sing-along experiences. Many movies recently have special showings in cinemas that allow young fans and old ones to belt out classic songs in the theater without worrying about someone throwing popcorn at them before they are kicked out. The latest Disney blockbuster, Encanto, is now the newest film from the House of Mouse to get the sing-along treatment, but this time it will be available on Disney+. After the songs We Don’t Talk About Bruno, Surface Pressure, and The Family Madrigal dominated the music charts around the world, the film found a whole new audience that had missed it in cinemas. Now, those fans can enjoy a sing-along version of this and other Disney movies in the comfort of their own homes.

Sing-along features have been part of the Disney way for a long time, with VHS releases in the 1990s usually featuring song clips with lyrics added, and whole Sing-along collections released to bring classic songs from the entire Disney catalog together to be enjoyed by children and their earplug-wearing parents over and over again.

A new sing-along version of Encanto will be added to Disney+ on March 18th, with other titles such as Frozen and its sequel being added in the same format by the end of the year. Obviously, it will take a little while for Disney to go through their whole catalog, but it is going to be a work in progress in the coming years.

Disney is always very quick to pick up on what works and what doesn’t in their movies. While Encanto only had moderate success in cinemas towards the end of 2021, its arrival on Disney+ saw the interest in the Colombian-based musical film really soar. Helped along by songs written by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto tells the story of Mirabel Madrigal, the only member of a large family not have been given a magical “gift,” but who is the only person who can save her family from falling apart and protect the legacy of the Madrigals.

Encanto picked up the Best Animated Film award at the BAFTAs this weekend, and at the same time, the song We Don’t Talk About Bruno was finally knocked off the top of the U.K. Singles chart after seven weeks, while the song is holding at number 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. With a BAFTA and Golden Globe now under its belt, Encanto is a firm favorite to grab the Best Animated Feature Film at the Oscars, making it a hat-trick of big wins for Disney. Lin-Manuel Miranda could also walk away with an Oscar if the song Dos Oruguitas managed to win Best Song at the ceremony.

While Encanto is a self-contained story, CEO Bob Chapek has referred to the movie as the start of a new franchise for Disney, which could see a sequel, as well as TV spin-offs, head into development soon. Encanto fans, watch this space.
