Sony Pictures has picked up distribution rights to Roland Emmerich's new project entitled Singularity. The studio has also slated a May 17, 2013 release date for the project.

Little is known about the story, except it is a sci-fi genre tale, which brings the director back to his big budget roots. His next movie, Anonymous, a non-explosive drama about the validity of William Shakespeare's work, is scheduled for release on October 28.

The Dark Tower is currently the only other movie lined up for a May 17, 2013 release, although it is highly unlikely the Universal Pictures project will make that date. We reported last month that production on The Dark Tower won't start until February 2012.

Roland Emmerich's last epic movie, the apocalyptic blockbuster 2012, raked in over $770 million worldwide.
