Slasher villains have become a staple of horror movies. From plainclothes killers such as Norman Bates to extravagant and supernatural terrors like Freddy Krueger, the level of carnage slashers leave in their wake may vary. Throughout the genre, some slasher villains have stood above others in repertoire — either due to their prevalence in sequels or their sheer brutality per film — leaving more blood on the trail than others. Ranked by their ability to slash or execute, but mostly by their concrete kill count, here are some of horror’s most brutal slasher villains.

7 Freddy Krueger — Kill Count: 60+

Freddy Krueger of the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise
New Line Cinema

A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger is nothing short of a horror icon. Always stocked with an endless barrage of zany quips, and seeming to always sport his signature striped sweater, Krueger often arrives prepared for battle. While his kill count ranks lower on the list than others, the dream walker has a knack for being distinct in his killings. Krueger’s interest in unsuspecting sleepers, trapped in their dream states, leads to both gruesome and creative outcomes across the franchise's run of films. Many years of his unique terror have landed him his own crossover flick with 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, and a Mortal Kombat appearance in 2011. Since his debut, he has been credited by some as murdering more than 60 victims.

6 Hannibal Lecter — Kill Count: 98

Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs
Orion Pictures

Although he commits his slashing with a variety of weapons, namely a police baton or his own teeth, the well-known cannibal and murderer Hannibal Lector is a lethal movie villain. First appearing in Thomas Harris' 1981 novel Red Dragon, the character has appeared in several pieces of media, including films and a television series. Seen in different lights and iterations throughout the character’s history, this calculated and manipulative villain, while violent, is sometimes viewed more as a thinker than a slasher. Still, Lector is a sly killer whose craftiness makes him an effective slasher who could contend with the best. Once played by the excellent Anthony Hopkins, the character is perhaps most captivating in his The SIlence of the Lambs appearance.

5 The Invisible Man / Jack Griffin — Kill Count: 100+

The Invisible Man
Universal Pictures Corp.

Foremost a mad scientist, classic character Jack Griffin — given a slightly different name in his recent film, and sometimes referred to as The Invisible Man — saw his 2020 reemergence with an iteration some may consider slasher-like. 2020's adaptation, from writer and director Leigh Whannell, comes after a series of sequels spawned from the original. As a new imagining of the same H.G. Wells character featured in the 1933 film, the villain does not shy away from knives or firearms in his return. His newfound supernatural abilities and tendency to stalk bears similarities to slashers, making him a formidable villain amongst other horror antagonists.

In most on-screen appearances, The Invisible Man is embodied by an entirely different person from the last, all of whom end up possessing the same ability. However, the character acquired his massive kill count far before 2020. By taking down a train during the original The Invisible Man, the scientist-turned-villain Jack Griffin kills over 100 people. The attack is in addition to other murders.

4 Chucky — Kill Count: 100+

Chucky of the 'Chucky' franchise
SYFY/USA Network

While the famed killer doll Chucky's true kill count is disputed, he is without doubt deadly. His credentials vary based on which franchise entries the viewer does and does not consider. When taken into account all iterations — across both television and cinema — most estimate that Chucky is responsible for well over 100 murders. First appearing in 1988's Child's Play, Chucky is a doll whose ability to escape death has steadily contributed to his overall kill count. Ranging from voodoo rituals to AI malfunctions, the doll does not exactly stay dead. The Child's Play franchise now encompasses seven main series films, a reboot film, a television series, and other outside efforts. The slasher villain is most famously played by voice actors Brad Dourif and Mark Hamill.

3 Jason Voorhees — Kill Count: 157-170

Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th franchise
Paramount Pictures

Jason Voorhees is yet another iconic horror movie slasher. Bullied in his youth, Voorhees' misdeeds have led him into sprawls with campers, townsfolk and Freddy Krueger alike, although he is far more fatal than most of his contemporaries. The Friday the 13th villain ranks near the top of the list for his high kill count, which is disputed to reach upwards of 170 kills. If considered, his actions leading to a space station's explosion in 2001's Jason X, and a ship's sinking in Jason Takes Manhattan from 1989 would bring his overall count to an even higher number.

2 Michael Myers — Kill Count: 170

Michael Myers in Halloween, who now features in Blumhouse intro
Universal Pictures

Committed into a psychiatric ward at a young age following the murder of his older sister, Michael Myers is a slasher whose story begins in tragedy. The already detached Myers does not strive in the hospital, and the murder of his sister at his own hands, the aftermath's effects, only became more defined during his time away. When he finally escapes, Myers has a bloodlust for the remaining members of his own family. This rather drastic code of conduct makes Myers, like most alongside him, a slasher villain without remorse. The Captain Kirk mask-wearing character would ultimately become responsible for 170 murders across his franchise's 13 films.

1 Pinhead — Kill Count: 246+ (at least)

Why did they replace Pinhead in Hellraiser?
Entertainment Film Distributors

While the visceral Pinhead is known to skewer, then often preserve, his enemies via hooked chains, the callous villain will not shy away from unsheathing demonic powers. An unconventional slasher for certain, Pinhead, a mainstay of the Hellraiser franchise, possesses similar abilities to others in the villain subset, and excels in slashing without elimination. After all, his lifestyle as a Cenobite basically bounds him to the act. In targeting a nightclub in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, the franchise villain slaughters 246 people in one go. While the character has killed elsewhere, this is Pinhead’s most sizable attack by far. As a horror villain and slasher, Pinhead’s nightclub attack makes him the most deadly out there.
