MGM has come aboard to finance and produce the boxing drama Southpaw, which was put into turnaround at DreamWorks back in August. Sony Pictures will now distribute Southpaw.

Rapper Eminem will star in Southpaw as a welterweight boxer who fights his way to the title, but his life falls apart shortly thereafter. The story follows his comeback trail in and out of the ring, as he tries to get another shot at the title and salvage a relationship with his daughter.

Antoine Fuqua is directing Southpaw from a screenplay by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter. This will be Eminem's first big-screen performance since the 2002 drama 8 Mile.

No production schedule was given for Southpaw.
