Last year, just one month after director M. Night Shyamalan and producer Jason Blum released their new thriller The Visit, Universal Pictures announced a January 20, 2017 release date for the pair's next movie, Split. We haven't heard anything about this mystery project since then, but today we finally have the first trailer from this harrowing thriller. While James McAvoy has become quite popular for his portrayal of Professor X in 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel trilogy, Spilt will showcase a much more sinister side to this beloved actor's repertoire.

M. Night Shyamalan returns to the captivating grip of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs with Split, an original thriller that arrives in theaters January 2017. Following last year's breakout hit The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producer Jason Blum (The Purge and Insidious series, The Gift) for the film. This new thriller from Universal Pictures will face some heavy competition on January 20, 2017, going up against Paramount's xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, The Weinstein Company's The Founder, which expands nationwide after a limited Oscar-qualifying run and High Top Releasing's The Resurrection of Gavin Stone.

While the mental divisions of those with dissociative identity disorder have long fascinated and eluded science, it is believed that some can also manifest unique physical attributes for each personality, a cognitive and physiological prism within a single being. Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him-as well as everyone around him-as the walls between his compartments shatter apart.

For Split, M. Night Shyamalan and Jason Blum reassemble their core team from The Visit, the No. 1-grossing horror film of 2015. Their fellow collaborators include producer Marc Bienstock and executive producers Ashwin Rajan and Steven Schneider. The supporting cast includes Jessica Sula, Haley Lu Richardson, Brad William Henke, Sterling K. Brown and Kim Director.

In addition to the trailer, we also have the first poster and photos from Split, which you can take a look at below. We also recently reported that M. Night Shyamalan is also producing a Tales From the Crypt reboot for TNT, which will kick off a two-hour horror block for the network. Take a look at the first trailer, poster and photos from Split, and stay tuned for more footage and photos.
