The galaxy far, far away seems like it isn’t going anywhere in the film industry anytime soon and continues to get bigger and bigger. A lot of fans have been satisfied with some spin-offs, with The Mandalorian and Andor having been almost universally acclaimed. Other fans have expressed some dismay and egregious disappointment or simply consider some Star Wars spin-offs to be triumphs of mediocrity, with Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett garnering more of a mixed reception.

Update October 9, 2023: Following the conclusion of Ahsoka, this article has been updated with even more great Star Wars characters that deserve their own spin-offs.

The franchise is only going to grow from here. While Star Wars is focusing on exploring various parts of the galaxy with The Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, and James Mangold's Star Wars film exploring new characters, the franchise also looks to expand on previously established characters. Following Ahsoka, there is going to be a Lando movie with Donald Glover, both set to star and co-write. While Lucasfilm should obviously look to create new and original characters for the franchise, here are some Star Wars characters that deserve spin-off projects of their own.

Qi'ra

Emilia Clarke Han Solo Star Wars
Lucasfilm

Played by Emilia Clarke in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Qi'ra has become a major character in the Star Wars franchise. She has been a focal character in various Star Wars comics set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and has even encountered Princess Leia herself. While those storylines show Qi'ra as the new head of Crimson Dawn, when audiences last saw her in Solo: A Star Wars Story, she had left Han and Chewie behind to meet with Maul.

That time between Qi'ra leaving and the original trilogy is unexplored territory, and it would be interesting to see her rise to power in the criminal underworld. Very much a Breaking Bad or Sopranoes-type story set within the backdrop of Star Wars is a compelling pitch. It would also give Emilia Clarke a chance to reprise her role as she was kind of wasted in Solo: A Star Wars Story. A spin-off series also could allow for some fun cameos from various Star Wars characters like a young Boba Fett to even the crew of The Ghost.

Finn

Lucasfilm Ltd.

John Boyega's Finn is certainly the Star Wars character that the sequel trilogy dropped the ball with the most. It indicated a strong, promising start for him as a Stormtrooper who broke from his programming and looked to make a name for himself. The films seemed to be setting him up as leading to a Stormtrooper rebellion, freeing the various Stormtroopers who were abducted as kids into being an army, but the films never followed up on this.

In anticipation of Ewan McGregor's return in the upcoming Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series, here's a look at his best moments in the prequel trilogy.

This is where a series could really excel. With plans for a film set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker focused on Rey, a companion series for that film should be a story about Finn and his quest to help out former Stormtroopers. It could be set after The Rise of Skywalker and show Finn going across the galaxy, looking to rehabilitate Stormtroopers who were brainwashed as kids. It could be a very compelling human story that focuses on compassion and helping troubled souls find a new future.

Rose Tico

Disney

Rose Tico is an underrated character in the Star Wars universe and one who deserved better than to be given such a small role in The Rise of Skywalker. She has a rich back story that could make for a very Andor-type series, one that explores her and her sister Paige's troubled past before they join the Resistance. A series could also follow up on her story after The Rise of Skywalker and show Rose as a political leader looking to help out those across the galaxy.

Kelly Marie Tran gave a great performance as Rose and deserved better than how many Star Wars fans treated her. While she has every right not to want to come back to the franchise, this a great character who deserves to have more of her story told.

Count Dooku

Christopher Lee as Count Dooku
20th Century Fox

A character that failed to get a lot of screen time in the prequels was Christopher Lee’s amazing turn as the sith lord Count Dooku. Dooku always seemed like a figure shrouded in darkness and mystery, was incredibly powerful with the dark side of the force, and had a close relationship with Kenobi's master, Qui-Gon Jinn. So, making a film about his origins and how he came to be a Sith lord would be very fitting.

The spin-off may shed some light and character development that fans have been longing for in the Count. It may come as a challenge to make this work because of the death of Christopher Lee (who admittedly made Dooku great), but that doesn't mean the filmmakers can’t focus on a recast of younger Dooku. Lucasfilm did dip their proverbial toes into the water with the animated series of shorts titled Tales of the Jedi. Fans were thrilled to see more of Dooku's past with his Padawan, Qui-Gon. Clearly, there is an interest in his story.

Captain Phasma

Captain Phasma was a very hyped-up villain before the release of The Force Awakens. Yet, similar to Boba Fett in the original trilogy, she was basically a cool-looking armor and not much more. There seems to be a lot of story for this character that could be explored in a mini-series. While she meets her end in The Last Jedi, a prequel story at her time during the early days of The First Order could be interesting and give some insight into this iconic Star Wars villain who fans want to know more about.

Mace Windu

20th Century Fox

Many fans speculated that this Jedi would be in the sequels as Snoke, or that he would be reprising his character in The Book of Boba Fett. However, that hasn’t happened, and it doesn't seem likely that he will return in any story taking place after Episode III. With that being said, the only way to remedy the lack of Samuel L. Jackson’s presence in the universe is to give him his own spin-off.

Star Wars: How Do The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and Dave Filoni’s Movie Connect to the Sequel Trilogy?
There may be 20 years between the events of Ahsoka and The Force Awakens, but the Star Wars franchise is working to tie these stories together.

The origins of Mace Windu are never explicitly mentioned in the series, so this would be the perfect opportunity to explore the Jedi master in more illuminated detail that would put the character in new situations and adventures. Jackson just headlined his first full television show, Marvel's Secret Invasion, this year, so perhaps having gone into television once, he'd do it again. His age might be a problem, unless Lucasfilm remakes Obi-Wan Kenobi with Windu or makes the controversial choice to use CGI.

R2-D2 & C-3PO

star-wars-r2-d2-c-3po-droids

It’s almost impossible to pick which droid would be better suited for their own spin-off because the two are synonymous with one another. So, it makes sense that both C-3PO and R2-D2 take this slot and could be paired together in a great sci-fi comedy. Usually, these characters are seen as comic relief in the series and, much like Jar-Jar Binks, could make the spin-off a kind of adventurous science fiction Odd Couple, a tale of the two walking in on the wrong situation at the wrong time.

It might be hard for the two to carry a series or film alone, but Disney and LucasFilm seem to want to try, with Star Wars: A Droid Story still on their release schedule. Though just an animated film, it doesn't seem impossible to imagine a live-action series of the two, and it'd be hilarious to imagine the duo's antics, especially if someone comically-minded like Taika Waititi or the Russo Brothers (who both recently brought their comedy to Marvel) could take control of it.

Wedge Antilles

wedge-antilles-star-wars
Lucasfilm Ltd.

Wedge is one of the most underrated characters from the original trilogy. One of Luke's best friends and a talented pilot for the Rebellion, Wedge has actually been a very important character, but he hasn't been given much screen time. His story of joining the Rebellion was explained in Star Wars: Rebels, where Sabine rescued him and a few others from an Imperial flight school.

For die-hard Star Wars fans, Wedge has long deserved his own show. For casual fans, it would be a great way to add depth to a character of the original trilogy they likely know but may not recognize. If Lucasfilm wants to show more about the Rebellion, who better to focus on than someone who has been in every major battle or someone who was there to lead the New Republic?

Lux Bonteri

Lucasfilm

Lux Bonteri is a lesser-known character from Star Wars, but his story has plenty to offer. Lux was the child of two Separatist senators, but his view of the galaxy was changed when he met Ahsoka Tano. The young lovers never got together but parted ways after they freed a planet from Separatist rule. Lux became a Senator for the Republic, but not much else has been shown about him after The Clone Wars series.

In Star Wars, where there's a Master, there is almost always an Apprentice or Padawan.

Lucasfilm has taken an interest in exploring the gaps between trilogies, and a show about Lux Bonteri could be the perfect opportunity to look at how things changed after the Empire took over. Could he serve as a double agent for the Rebellion, or did his past affiliation with the Jedi make him a target? It's a rich story with plenty of possibilities.

Qui-Gon Jinn

Qui Gon Jin holding his green lightsaber with Padme next to him pointing a gun and a group of people behind them
20th Century Fox

Much like Mace Windu and Count Dooku, Qui-Gon Jinn’s past is never explicitly mentioned in the course of the series. What is known is that he was Obi-Wan’s Jedi master and, at the end of The Phantom Menace, was murdered by Darth Maul. Exploring his past would give fans a fresh new look at the character.

If exploring his past is out of the question, then perhaps discussing his time post-death would be just as cool. It would be interesting to know how Jedi like him communicate after death through the force. Fans were thrilled to see him in the Obi-Wan series but wished to see him more. Clearly, there is a desire to see the Jedi return.

Yoda

Yoda with Lightsaber
Lucasfilm

This is a character who has long been overdue for his own spin-off. The little green Jedi has showcased his wisdom and fighting skills throughout the series. He’s had enough screen time in movies, TV shows, and various other media that it seems fans know so much about Yoda, but ardent fans have yet to see the majority of his 900 years of life.

His presence is so magnetic and mystifying that it seems impossible that Lucasfilm would not be interested in a project of this scope. The quickest evidence for his fans' demand is the immense amount of popularity and vocal adoration that Baby Yoda received in The Mandalorian.

Darth Maul

Darth Maul - Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
20th Century Fox

This tattooed Sith is a Star Wars character that always felt lacking in character development, especially since his screen time was cut (no pun intended) in The Phantom Menace. Even with more ground covered in the Star Wars television shows, Darth Maul still seems like a barren character that never got the best treatment in his arc, and yet had so much style over substance and strange appeal (and endless merchandise) that fans wanted more.

These Are the Most Major Changes in Star Wars Characters
If you're a reminiscing old Star Wars fan or a curious newbie, this survey can help you see the progression of some of its most iconic characters.

There are many major parts of Maul's story left unaccounted for. From his time escaping Order 66 at the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to becoming the head of the crime syndicate Crimson Dawn to his eventual expulsion and isolation seen in Rebels, Maul is a character filled with stories that could make for some exciting hours of television and to give viewers a hint into the dark side of the Force.

Darth Sidious

MOV_Palpatine-Sidious
Lucasfilm.

Probably the most sinister villain in the entire saga, Darth Sidious (otherwise known as Emperor Palpatine) has been single-handedly involved in some of the most nefarious schemes in the Star Wars lore. The spin-off could easily talk about his meteoric rise to power (akin to a political drama like House of Cards) and his relationship with Darth Plagueis.

With top-notch writing and some expert casting, the project could prove to be a winning work in the canon. A Young Palpatine is a story is one that would open a lot of possibilities.

Hondo Ohnaka

Star Wars Hondo
Disney

Hondo Ohnaka may be one of the funniest Star Wars characters. He is a pirate with a heart of gold who might just lovingly double-cross his friends for some gold. Hondo has a long history in the franchise. He was a pirate captain with a large crew during the Clone Wars, favoring the Jedi but being willing to do business with almost anyone. After the Empire took over, he lost his crew and became a bit of a rouge, teaming up with the Rebels during important quests.

Aside from the fact that he's a charming character, there is just so much of his story left to tell. The droids, Chewbacca and Hondo are some of the only characters who are alive during all three trilogies, so it only makes sense that Hondo should be given his turn in the spotlight.

Asajj Ventress

Asajj Ventress
Disney Platform Distribution

Asajj Ventress is perhaps one of the most interesting characters in from the Star Wars franchise. She was never quite accepted by the Sith, as Palpatine feared her power and wouldn't let Dooku take her on as a formal apprentice. She fought with the Jedi until Dooku tried to have her assassinated. She returned to her home world, made Savage Opress with the help of witches, and lost everything after years of loyalty to the Separatists. She became a bounty hunter for a while, almost repairing her relationship with Ahsoka (almost).

It would be fascinating to see what else her story holds. Not only is there a chance to explore a character that has the makings of a great arc, but she is an impressive fighter. Many fans would love to see her and her iconic blades get the attention they deserve. The series could also adapt her finale story, Dark Disciple, which was set to be a story arc in The Clone Wars before the series was canceled and saw her find redemption before her death.
