You've heard them before, and probably have a few of your own. Star Wars fan theories are nothing new. For almost as long as the movies have been part of our culture, fans have went crazy coming up with all kinds of theories that more or may not be true about the characters in Star Wars. These theories sometimes get way out of hand, like the Jar Jar Binks Sith Lord theory that was floating around a few months ago. But a new theory surrounding Rey's parents, crazy as it may be, actually has a lot of evidence to support it. Should this theory be true, it looks like Rey may be related to Emperor Palpatine.

Fair warning, the rest of this article may contain spoilers for Star Wars Episode VII. A new video from Vincent Vendetta's YouTube channel has done a deep dive on this fan theory, and makes a very strong case as to why this very well might be true. The first major point that he makes is Rey's fighting style, which he points out is not only similar to Palpatine's, but is borderline identical. When watching the side by side footage, it is hard to argue against the evidence.

"The very first move we see Rey perform with a lightsaber is a forward thrusting stab. If this move looks familiar to you, that's because it's also the very first move we see Emperor Palpatine perform in Revenge of the Sith. This is so important because Rey and Palpatine are the only two force users in Star Wars to ever use that move."

The video lays out footage of Palpatine fighting in Revenge of the Sith and plays it next to shots of Rey fighting in The Force Awakens, and it is uncanny how similar they are. The fighting style is perhaps the most concrete evidence of this fan theory, but there is more. The video also does a very good job of pointing out that Rey has some very clear pulls to the dark side that may have gone slightly unnoticed. For example, she displays moments of anger that a light side force user probably wouldn't be prone to, like when she first starts killing Stormtroopers with her blaster.

Most of her moments of rage and anger come during her encounters with Kylo Ren, and this is where things get really interesting. For one, the video points out that she seems to take great pleasure in exposing Ren's greatest fears while he is interrogating Rey. Also, she goes on a pretty hate filled rampage when she finally picks up Luke's lightsaber and fights Ren. But the most telling bit came when the video revealed that in the official script for The Force Awakens, it said that Rey wanted to kill Kylo Ren. Here is the excerpt from the script.

"And she could kill him--right now, with ONE VICIOUS STRIKE! But she stops. Realizing she stands on a greater edge than even the cliff -- the edge of the dark side."

There is a lot more to this video, but those are the main points that Vendetta touches on in order to explain the theory that Palpatine is related to Rey. He also spends a very good deal of time debunking the theory that Luke is Rey's father, and does a pretty good job at that as well. We are at the very least going to have to wait until Star Wars Episode VIII to find out who Rey's parents are, but for now, this theory may be the most compelling, and plausible one that anyone has come up with.
