Last week, we reported that Gary Whitta has completed his first draft of the Untitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Off screenplay, and has now parted ways with the project, moving on to work on Mark Millar's Starlight. That report reveals LucasFilm will likely bring on a new writer, and today, /Film reports that Simon Kinberg is taking over writing duties on the project. LucasFilm and Simon Kinberg's reps will not comment on the story, but the site is confident this information is correct.

If the news does prove to be true, it would make sense since Simon Kinberg is already deeply involved in the Star Wars universe, serving as a consultant on this year's highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens and as a writer and producer on the new TV series Star Wars Rebels. The writer-producer was also confirmed to write one of the other spinoff movies back in February 2013, which was rumored to be director Josh Trank's Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off arriving in 2018. But that was never confirmed. It still isn't known if the Untitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Off is a "wholly new venture," or just a rewrite of one of the two previously-announced projects.

The Untitled Gareth Edwards Directed Star Wars Spin-Off reportedly centers on a group of space pirates and a young Han Solo, or it may deal with a group of spies trying to steal plans for the original Death Star, right before the events seen in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. Those details have yet to be confirmed, but production is scheduled to begin later this year at Pinewood Studios in London, shortly after the new James Bond movie Spectre wraps production.
