We know that Star Wars: Episode VII will launch a new trilogy next year, with Star Wars: Episode VIII following in 2017 and Star Wars: Episode IX coming in 2019. LucasFilm is also planning an Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off and Untitled Star Wars Boba Fett Spin-Off to debut in 2016 and 2018, giving fans one Star Wars movie a year until 2019. Of course, very few details have been confirmed about any of these projects, but, earlier today, Kathleen Kennedy revealed new details about the Star Wars canon that George Lucas wants to preserve, saying that characters from the spin-offs will not appear in the new trilogy.
"George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, Episode VII falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created. There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it's a roadmap that George made pretty clear."
What's interesting about this statement is that we already know that Harrison Ford is likely returning as Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode VII, but could this mean that the Untitled Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off actually focuses on another character, since they don't want the spin-offs and trilogy to cross over? Of course, it's possible that that the spin-off focuses on a younger version of Han Solo, but that has not been confirmed. Or, could this spin-off be centered on a completely different character, such as Yoda?
Earlier today, we reported that Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger) is a front runner to direct the Untitled Star Wars Boba Fett Spin-Off, although an offer has not been made to the filmmaker yet.
