Superhero movies have been dominating the box office landscape over the past few years, with current blockbusters like Marvel's Captain America: Civil War ($940.8 million worldwide), Warner Bros.' Batman v Superman ($868.8 million worldwide) and 20th Century Fox's Deadpool ($762.3 million worldwide) representing three of the top five movies released in 2016. With Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox prepping huge slates of superhero fare, fans will be inundated with more heroes and villains than ever on the big screen. And one of today's most prominent filmmakers is taking notice. While doing press at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend, The BFG director Steven Spielberg revealed what his favorite Marvel movie is, and the answer may surprise you.

The filmmaker arrived at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend for the world premiere of his Roald Dahl adaptation The BFG, ahead of its July 1 theatrical release. While doing press with Omelete, the filmmaker was asked what his favorite Marvel Studios movie is, which happens to be his favorite superhero movie as well, 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. Here's what the filmmaker had to say in his statement below.

"I really like Richard Donner's Superman, Nolan's Dark Knight and the first Iron Man movie, but the superhero movie that most impressed me was Guardians of the Galaxy. When it ended, I left the cinema with the feeling that I had just experienced something new, free of cynicism and without concern for being gritty when necessary."

After the filmmaker's interview was released, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to his Twitter page, revealing that Steven Spielberg's praise of Guardians of the Galaxy is the "greatest compliment I've ever received." The director also admitted that he was "teary-eyed" after reading Steven Spielberg's praise, while adding that no one influenced Guardians of the Galaxy more than Steven Spielberg. Of course, Steven Spielberg certainly wasn't alone in praising Guardians of the Galaxy, which was beloved by fans and critics alike en route to earning $331.1 million domestically and $773.3 million worldwide.

James Gunn is currently in Atlanta filming the highly-anticipated sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is slated for release on May 5, 2017. Very little is known about this follow-up, except that fans will learn who Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father is, which was heavily teased in the original Guardians of the Galaxy. While we wait for more on this superhero sequel, take a look at James Gunn's tweets below, in response to Steven Spielberg's praise of Guardians of the Galaxy.
