Production started last week on the new CBS series Supergirl, with the network releasing the first official photos on Friday featuring star Melissa Benoist in her full Supergirl costume. Today, The Live Feed reports that Malina Weissman has been cast as a young Kara Zor-El. The actress will guest star in the pilot episode, confirming speculation that the DC Comics series will flash back to her childhood years. She most recently appeared on the big screen as a younger version of Megan Fox's April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

What isn't known at this time is if the young Kara will be on Earth or on her home planet of Krypton. Kara was born on Krypton but was sent to Earth before her home planet was destroyed. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by her foster family the Danvers, who taught her to be cautious of using her incredible Kryptonian abilities. Melissa Benoist's Kara is 24 years old, working as an assistant to CatCo founder Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), as she starts to embrace her abilities and become the hero she was always born to be.

The cast also includes Mehcad Brooks (James Olsen), Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El), Chyler Leigh (Alexandra "Alex" Danvers), Jeremy Jordan (Winslow "Winn" Schott), David Harewood (Hank Henshaw) and Faran Tahir (The Commander). Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and Helen Slater (Supergirl) have also been cast in surprise roles. Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler wrote the pilot episode, which Glen Winter is directing, and will serve as executive producers alongside Sarah Schechter and Andrew Kreisberg.

In related news, we also have new set photos featuring Melissa Benoist in her Kara Danvers attire. As you can see below, she is taking a page from her famous cousin Superman's playbook, wearing glasses as Kara, even though she wasn't wearing spectacles in the official photos released last week. Take a look at the images below, and stay tuned for more as production continues on Supergirl.
