Long before Henry Cavill's portrayal of Superman in 2013's Man of Steel and 2016's Batman vs Superman, Nicolas Cage was set to play Clark Kent in director Tim Burton's Superman Lives, although it never got off the ground. Over the past few years, concept art images and photos have surfaced showing a long-haired Nicolas Cage in the Superman suit. Today we have a clip from the upcoming documentary The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?, which reveals footage from a costume test, where the actor is seen trying on the iconic Man of Steel suit.
Along with the brief costume test video, the clip also features director Jon Schnepp interviewing costume designer Colleen Atwood and Tim Burton's assistant Derek Frey. Jon Schnepp clears up rumors of a "bio-suit" that this version of Superman would have worn. Many thought that it was a bio-suit after photos leaked of the "rainbow-colored" costume, but, as it turns out, fans would have only seen that for just two minutes, after the Man of Steel was in a "weird liquid bath," which caused an electrical effect on the suit.
Unfortunately, Superman Lives never saw the light of day, but fans can learn all about what happened to this superhero movie when The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? debuts on July 9. The documentary also features interviews with Tim Burton, producers Jon Peters and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, screenwriters Kevin Smith, Wesley Strick, Dan Gilroy, production designer Rick Heinrichs; special effects artist Steve Johnson, storyboard artist Tim Burgard.
