The Amazing Spider-Man got off to a solid start at the box office yesterday, breaking the Tuesday single day record with an estimated $35 million. That tally includes the $7.5 million this superhero origin story rang up during midnight screenings.

The opening day total surpasses the $27.9 million earned by Transformers on the same Tuesday in 2007. Transformers went on to make a whopping $155.4 million over its opening six-day frame five years ago, which included $8.8 million from midnight shows. The $35 million opening day includes $4 million from nearly 300 IMAX theaters.

We won't know for sure until Sunday, but varying estimates put The Amazing Spider-Man's six-day haul between $120 million and $140 million. The superhero reboot will also have to contend with the 3D concert film Katy Perry: Part of Me opening tomorrow, and the Oliver Stone crime drama Savages opening on Friday.
