We reported a few weeks ago that Matt Damon was definitely not returning for The Bourne Legacy. Though, new details reveal the movie will allow for the possibility of Damon's Jason Bourne returning in the future. Deadline revealed that Tony Gilroy's take-over of the franchise will focus more on the company behind the Treadstone operation.

The Bourne Legacy will follow new characters, which expand the mythology of the series, and it will feature a new protagonist who is also a former Treadstone agent with past experiences similar to Jason Bourne. This new story takes place following the end of the original trilogy, with those particular events factoring into this new plot. Even though Jason Bourne will not be featured in The Bourne Legacy, there is room being left open for Matt Damon to reprise his Jason Bourne character in future installments. Here's what Tony Gilroy said:

"I'm not going to get into the plot, but you saw the other three films, you know everything that happened, and it's not a dream sequence. What I can say is, you thought that was the whole world, but it was a small piece of what was going on. Ultimatum exploded at the end with people arrested. We deal with that as a reality, it has ramifications that echo out into the larger world. And of course, Jason Bourne is still alive and out there in the world. I don't want to go beyond that, because the last thing I need is for every blogger to be second guessing."
