‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Throws a Prison Break and Riot at Carnegie Mellon University

New story details have immerged from the Pittsburgh location of Christopher Nolan's final Batman sequel.

CMU will host a riot for The Dark Knight Rises Director Christopher Nolan has managed to keep most of the story details in regards to The Dark Knight Rises a secret. Until now. The movie will soon start shooting at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and as required by law, the faculty and students have to be made aware of what is taking place on the campus.

It looks like Christopher Nolan will be staging a prison break, a riot, and a motorcycle driving through a building on the grounds of CMU.

In a recent blog post by CMU, the staff and students were offered this update on The Dark Knight Rises, which gives away specific story details. Some might consider these details spoilers, others will think its not enough information as it barely scratched the surface of what we'll be seeing come July 20th, 2012.

Hollywood Comes to CMU

Carnegie Mellon will once again play host to Hollywood, when several scenes for a major motion picture by Warner Bros., currently using the working title "Magnus Rex," are filmed outside of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) in late July, and inside and outside of the Mellon Institute in early August. Carnegie Mellon is working closely with the production company to ensure that the university and its students, faculty and staff will benefit from the movie-making experience with minimal disruption to normal operations. Here's the skinny on the filming dates, the scenes and parking and traffic restrictions.

Where and When

Scenes will be filmed outside the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at the intersection of Dithridge and Henry streets from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 30-31.

Scenes will be filmed outside of the Mellon Institute on the Fifth Ave. side from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday, July 31, and inside of the Mellon Institute's fourth-floor entrance lobby on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 3-4. Prep work for the filming will be taking place in both locations beginning July 11.

What Will Happen

Scenes outside the SEI, which will be portrayed as a prison, will include an explosion, a prison break, precision stunt driving, gunfire, atmospheric smoke, and controlled pyrotechnic explosions. scenes outside the Fifth Ave. entrance of Mellon Institute include a standoff between two rivals that escalates into a riot. One character drives a motorcycle through the fourth floor lobby, out the front doors and down the steps onto Fifth Ave. Special effects include precision stunt driving, gunfire and atmospheric smoke. for general questions about the filming, please contact Carrie Chisholm at carriech@andrew.cmu.edu

SEI and Mellon Institute Operations: the SEI will be open during the filming on July 30-31, but few employees should be affected since it takes place on the weekend. The Mellon Institute will be open for business during filming on Aug. 3-4 although some areas will be closed to employees and the public, including the fourth-floor entrance lobby off of Fifth Ave., fourth floor elevator lobby and library. There will be no access to the building from the Fifth Ave. entrance from July 29 - Aug. 8, and employees are asked to use another entrance on these days.
SEI loading dock deliveries will be suspended from Friday, July 29 through Monday, Aug. 1."

@narrator That's what? 2nd time you've called me on that? :P (it's cool though, I'm the one that admitted it in the first place).

I can't believe people actually percieve this as a spoiler. Don't trailers reveal a lot more?

              • redrum • 4 years ago

Exactly as mentioned before, there is nothing more into this than would be a average movie. It's to soon to read anything into it and besides who would really want to? to me it takes away from the experience of watching it on the big screen.

Who would like to see "Etrigan" in an upcoming Batman?

                New forum?

..what details? A confrontation between two characters? A prison break? No offense, but for people who appear to have all the reverence in the world for Nolan's storytelling abilities, they're not really exhibiting any sign of faith in the man by avoiding the most infinitesimal of details surrounding TDKR like it's the plague. Sure, this little tid-bit may or may not give away more than you'd like, but the article did contain a spoiler alert, for those who regret reading it. As for the title itself being a spoiler, do you really believe that knowing a prison riot occurs in the film will at all hinder the experience? What, were you not gonna watch the trailers as well? Get real, folks, you'd become aware of this sooner or later, and it really doesn''t damage the plots solidity at all.

Hell, look @dan1. He read the damn thing on wikipedia, or something, before actually seeing the film, and he still highly enjoyed it (not to call ya on that, bud, just using you as an example). Nolan's films rarely rely on twists and turns to carry the film, as opposed to constant and progressively solid story-telling.

it's cool that they're filming there but im not reading any of the details after the initial story. i dont want to read any spoilers and such. i just dont want to know until i see the movie. it's more fun that way. knowing everything in advance ruins the movie.

@k-man- No argument necessary, I get the point your getting at completely but what I stated was simply that the title of the article alone implies enough information to think that an important sequence might be given away.

What i mean is, reading a title about a prison riot being held at a school for The Dark Knight Rises seems different than being told about a school being temporarily used as a prison for The Dark Knight Rises which is what we're usually accustomed to hearing on this site. Know what I'm saying?

My comment was never directed at you, so don't worry. For some reason this article just seemed a little off to me thats all. (and for the record, I gave this article a thumbs up) =P

@moviemaniac66 -- I read a little bit of it, but I'm with you on that.

@ChiRep-1 - Look, I'm not trying to get into an argument with anyone......but to say that there is a jailbreak scene or a riot scene, without giving away details like this article, in a movie like The Dark Knight Rises is about as much of a spoiler as it is to say that The Fast and the Furious 6 will have cars and a chase sequence. Those kinds of things are expected......especially after the end of The Dark Knight (we all knew that if Heath Ledger hadn't passed away it would be he who was breaking out of prison instead of whoever they have doing it now.). Besides, this doesn't even go into specifics......it doesn't even mention a single character from the Batman universe by name!!!

So, point being.......if you think an article like THIS, of all articles, gives too much away, you mind as well not even read movieweb.com because EVERYTHING is going to seem like a spoiler to you.

Look, I'm just saying......you're making a big deal out of nothing.

I do not want to read this as i want to be surprised.

@k-man I'm with Newtron on this one, even though we didn't have to read it the title alone gives away a specific ( and possibly key ) plot point. But I do understand that anything with this movie will be impossible to keep away so I can't complain much

I would love to see this as part of the trailer!

Hmmm, maybe Bane leading a prison break, he and Bats fight outside, and bat driving the Bat-Pod through the fourth floor out the window and down the steps...

think fro now on unless its a trailer or poster i just skip anything on this movie =)

also been meaning to say this for awhile and thats "Could a new feature be added to the user profile settings were we can add filters on movies we DONT what to see news on... so when we visit MW we see nothing on the movie we dont want what to know"

@balanorange Well, you did get an intelligent reaction from a person or two (@jakn for example). You did give a warning in the article, so I can't complain much.
