Many were surprised by Matt Damon's appearance as a stranded astronaut in Interstellar, as it was never part of the publicity push for that film and came with a nice twist. Now, Matt Damon is taking on a similar role, though set against a decidedly different story in The Martian. Ridley Scott directs this adaptation of the very popular Andy Weir novel, and we now have a first look at the actor in his astronaut gear.

In The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney becomes one of the first people to walk on Mars. And he'll likely be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive. And even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills, and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit, he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him? If you haven't read the book, you'll find out when The Martian opens everywhere this fall.

This latest image is only the second picture from The Martian released. We did get an official look at Matt Damon on set earlier this year as part of a Super Bowl bet the actor made with the author. The image is a magazine scan, but now that it's out in the open, we'll surely get a hi-res look sometime in the near future. In the meantime, check out this cool sneak peek at what may be Ridley Scott's next sci-fi masterpiece. The trailer is expected to debut this August in theaters with Fantastic Four:
