Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro talk about creating the Cartoon Network phenomenon
Started as a side gig on Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis created a small show on Cartoon Network called Aqua Teen Hunger Force. They took food products and gave them hero qualities.
Well, that small little idea became the highest rated show on the network, prompting Dave and Matt to make a film based on Master Shake (Dana Snyder), Meatwad, and Frylock - properly titled, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. In the flick, our fearless trio go on a mission to find a missing piece to their new exercise machine. But what they don't know is that piece is very coveted; it's the key to world domination.
We spoke with Dave and Matt about the film; check out what they said:
So did you ever think this idea would get this big?
Dave Willis: You always hope for it; they thought the DVD would only sell 40,000 copies, and it sold a half a million - so, cool!
You've got a talking milk shake, talking French fries -
Matt Maillaro: Talking food, basically.
Do you guys have weird dreams at night?
Matt Maillaro: We don't eat food, so it really doesn't offend us.
Where did the concept of talking food come from?
Dave Willis: There's been talking food since dinosaur time; we just stole the idea from those people.
Matt Maiellaro: And then we killed them, so now it's our idea.
Did you get your ideas for animation from anywhere; how do you get inspiration?
Matt Maiellaro: Yeah, no; we don't have the money to do any of that cool stuff.
Dave Willis: Or the desire to do so much work;
Matt Maiellaro: It's so much easier to pay someone $3 and tell them to work.
Dave Willis: That animation in the movie, so much of it was done in 1999 and it just kept getting reused, and it kept getting cheaper.
While you're in the booth, are you trying not to laugh?
Matt Maiellaro: That glass keeps people's laughter from getting through.
Dave Willis: Yeah, we pray someone's not choking, cause we wouldn't be able to hear them.
Dana was saying he tries to keep in his burps, but they seem to take on its own character.
Dave Willis: Yeah, Dana thinks the world revolves around him.
Matt Maiellaro: There is an aftermath to everything.
So what's next for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force?
Matt Maiellaro: Timecop 2, appearing in Timecop 2 with Van Damme.
Will our favorite talking French fry container, milk shake carton and meatball be able to save the day? Stay tuned to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters hitting the big screen April 13th; it's rated R.
