The Passion of the Christ: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ sold 4.1 million combined DVD and VHS units through to consumers Tuesday, its first day in release, according to the video's distributor, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

While that number is impressive by any standard, it doesn't top record sales for live-action films like New Line Home Video's original release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which is believed to have topped 6.5 million combined DVD and VHS units sold through to consumers during its first day on home video. The Day 1 record for a combined DVD and VHS release is believed to be the Walt Disney Co./Pixar animated family title Finding Nemo, which Disney executives said topped 8 million in first-day sales.
