Actress Mae Whitman (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) has joined the cast of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. We reported in February that Summit Entertainment will distribute the drama.

Logan Lerman and Emma Watson will star in this adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's best-selling 1999 book. The story centers on Logan Lerman's character, an unpopular high school student who writes letters to an anonymous penpal. Mae Whitman will play Mary Elizabeth, a tattooed vegetarian who is portrayed as the main character's first girlfriend. The book was heralded for its gripping and realistic portrayal of awkward adolescence.

Stephen Chbosky adapted his own book and will direct The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Production will start next month in Pittsburgh.
