The Wrap is reporting that the 1978 cult-classic horror movie The Swarm will be remade by producers Roy Lee (The Ring) and Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity).

Although a screenwriter hasn't been attached yet, commercial director Ash Bolland is signed to the project, making his feature directorial debut. It wasn't clear if this remake will be based on Arthur Herzog's book that the original was based on, or if they are going in another direction. A writer is expected to be hired within a month.

Michael Caine starred in the original movie, playing a scientist who discovers that killer bees from South America are arriving in swarms. He tries to prevent the Army from attacking the swarm, although he ultimately aides the Army in trying to prevent the bees from attacking Houston. Although the movie was a financial failure, the movie grew to achieve cult status throughout the years.
