Marvel and Paramount Pictures' latest superhero tale Thor debuted in theaters last night, taking in just shy of $3.3 million from its midnight screenings.

Thor played on an estimated 1,800 screens early Friday morning, in advance of its 3,995-theater opening today, which includes several IMAX theaters as well. The Kenneth Branagh-directed tale is on track to gross north of $60 million in its opening weekend.

Chris Hemsworth stars as the mythical title character, the God of Thunder who is exiled from the land of Asgard by his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), and banished to Earth. Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings, and Idris Elba also star in Thor.
