Director Tim Burton himself has weighed in on recent reports of a Beetlejuice sequel moving forward. While nothing has been officially announced, it was reported back in February that Brad Pitt's Plan B was producing Beetlejuice 2 with Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder expected to reprise their roles. This was followed by rumors that Johnny Depp would also be joining the cast in a mystery role.

Per Deadline, Burton has now offered some more clarification about Beetlejuice 2. Directly from the director of the original movie, Burton first claimed on Friday that such rumors were false and that he wasn't currently working on the film. However, he reportedly backtracked on these comments the next day, clarifying that his remarks about not actively working on Beetlejuice 2 doesn't mean that it won't happen. Though he remains vague, Burton then teases that he is in fact working on some "ideas and things" for the long-gestating sequel, but notes that the project is still in its very early stages and that it's still not guaranteed to happen at this point. As Burton puts it:

“Nothing is out of the question. I only know if I’m making a film when I’m actually on the set shooting. I try to go back to the root of everything. It springs from a seed and then it grows, rather than out these statements. I am working on ideas and things but it’s all very early days. We’ll set how it goes. How’s that for a none answer?”

Beetlejuice Stars Are Open to Returning

Different stars of the first Beetlejuice have expressed their desire to return at different points. Just recently, Geena Davis told People she would love to return, noting she wants to "play every character I've ever played again." Though, she did note that ghosts don't age, so that might present an issue with her coming back.

"How would they explain that they're older?" she ponders.

In a previous interview, Michael Keaton also spoke about how he'd be open to doing Beetlejuice 2, but that there would be a lot of pressure on those involved to get it right. The film would need a script that was essentially perfect.

“I just think it’s like a little piece of art that you better get right if you ever do it again,” he said. “Otherwise, you just kind of don’t touch it.”

He also said in a separate interview in 2015 that it was the one film he wanted to revisit more than any other, but only if Tim Burton was involved.

“I always said that it’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again," he said, noting he's had discussions about the idea with the director. "But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and emailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.”
