The Dark Knight Rises' Tom Hardy is in early talks to star in Everest for Sony Pictures and director Doug Liman. If a deal is finalized, the actor will portray legendary explorer George Mallory.

The story is an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's non-fiction book Paths of Glory, which chronicles explorer George Mallory's ascent into the record books as the first man to reach the top of Mount Everest. The drama will center on his obsession with the mountain, and his rivalry with fellow climber George Finch. Mallory and his climbing partner Sandy Irvine failed in two previous attempts in 1921 and 1922. They were spotted near the summit on their third attempt in 1924 before they disappeared. Their remains were discovered in 1999 by Mark Anker.

Sheldon Turner wrote the adapted screenplay, with Jennifer Klein and Dave Bartis producing. Production will begin after Doug Liman wraps on All You Need Is Kill, starring Tom Cruise.
