Disney took to social media to announce that Toy Story 4 will officially hit theaters on June 21st, 2019. The long-awaited movie will come out a little over a month after the release of the still untitled Avengers 4, which Disney also owns. However, the news left Toy Story and Pixar fans divided, with some sharing their excitement over the fourth installment, while others maintain that the franchise should have ended with Toy Story 3, since there was closure to the beloved series. The excitement definitely outweighs the negativity surrounding Toy Story 4, with fans wondering how the story will continue.

Disney utilized the Toy Story social media accounts to announce that Toy Story 4 will be hitting theaters on June 21st, 2019. The announcement came with an image of post-it notes arranged to make the number 4 along with a caption that reads, "Reach for the post-it! Toy Story 4 comes to theatres on June 21, 2019." The announcement was made somewhat quietly by Disney late this week, which most fans seemingly missed.

It has been previously reported that Toy Story 4 will not be a direct sequel to the third installment. Toy Story 3 saw the beloved toys get passed down to a new child, Bonnie, and as previously mentioned, many fans believed that the third installment was a good way to leave the franchise as it provided the perfect closure. Instead, Toy Story 4 is rumored to focus on the romance between Tom Hanks' sheriff Woody and Annie Potts' Bo Peep, who was noticeably absent from the third movie. The latest toy adventure will more than likely not have anything to do with the events of the previous sequel.

The announcement of the release date of Toy Story 4 comes after there has been some trouble behind-the-scenes. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack were originally tapped to pen the script, but later left citing "creative and philosophical differences" with Pixar. Additionally, Pixar CCO John Lasseter took a leave of absence after multiple allegations of misconduct. However, Toy Story 4 seems to be right on track with a release date that isn't too far away at this point, especially considering that Disney and Pixar fans have been waiting for the fourth movie since 2014.

A report in January revealed that Stephany Folsom, who contributed to writing Thor: Ragnarok, had signed on to write the script for Toy Story 4, which left many to wonder if the movie was going to get pushed back. That doesn't seem to be the case since Disney has now officially announced the release date. While we're still a little over a year away from Toy Story 4 hitting theaters, it's exciting to finally have some official news.
