The trailer for Harry & Meghan, the upcoming Netflix docu-series about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has dropped. The trailer features intimate pictures of the much-discussed couple throughout their relationship and some recent live footage of the couple. The series comes from two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus (What Happened, Miss Simone?).

During an October cover feature Variety, Meghan Markle spoke about the respected director's participation in the series:

"It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it. But that’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens," she said.

According to Netflix, the six-part series, "explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.” Markle and Prince Harry made headlines in 2016 as news of their relationship became public. The two wed in 2018 in a lavish royal wedding, but stepped back as senior members of the British royal family in 2020. The two reported they would be splitting their time between the UK and North America, and currently reside in California with their two small children. The couple famously spoke with Oprah last year, and alleged racism within the royal family, which has received backlash from members of the family.

Erica Sashin, Mark Monroe, Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Ben Browning, Chanel Pysnik, Jon Bardin, Mala Chapple, and Angus Wall serve as executive producers. Today's announcement teases that the docu-series is coming soon.

The trailer for Harry & Meghan comes just two days after former counterterrorism police chief Neil Basu confirmed claims that Markle and Prince Harry have made about their life in the monarchy. Basu told Britain’s Channel 4 News that there were credible threats against Markle, before adding that people "have been prosecuted for those threats."

The trailer also comes less than a month after the premiere of Season Five of Netflix's The Crown. The popular series' latest season has been met with criticism due to the recentness of events being covered. Season five dives into the 1990s, a painful decade for the royal family. During that time period, Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced and a biography from the Princess alleged Prince Charles' affair, there was also a devastating fire at Windsor Hall, and in 1997, Princess Diana succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident. English actress Dame Judi Dench was one of the most vocal critics, calling the series' depictions of events "cruelly unjust." Netflix has added a disclaimer about the series, calling it a "fictionalized drama."

The series will be able to be streamed on the Netflix app and at Netflix.com.
