Halpin, Minnesota, "Happy Town," has enjoyed an uneasy peace for five years, but all that is about to change. Still haunted by a number of unsolved kidnappings, the town now faces a new crime that brings its unresolved fears to the surface. Has the elusive "Magic Man" - who many believe is responsible for the bizarre abductions - returned to claim another victim?
Tortured screams are heard from one of the ice-fishing huts set up along a frozen pond. Inside, a man is tossed about the shack. He’s strapped to a chair by an unidentifiable figure who wants answers. Once the captive tells him what he wants to know, the captor drives a metal stake through the man’s skull. Welcome to Happy Town.
Sheriff Conroy is rushed to the hospital after chopping off his hand. He shouts gibberish about Chloe, the only girl he ever loved. He says, “Tommy, these people…they’re wicked. And I don’t mean ordinary wicked. Their blood is black and their souls are hideous.” Tommy has no idea what this means. When they lift up the sheriff’s severed hand, his wedding ring slips off his finger and bounces to the ground.
A terrible car crash has left Henley Boone lying unconscious in the middle of the road. A handsome stranger comes to her aid. He introduces himself as Aidan and takes Henley to the nearest medical center. The doctor finds no sign of a concussion. Of course, Henley may want to get a second opinion considering the fact that Aidan accidently brought her to a veterinarian.
Rachel Conroy is missing, having disappeared without a trace during Thaw Fest. Dead flowers have been left on the steps of her home. In the past, the Magic Man always sent flowers to the victim’s family. The investigation will press on without help from the state police, as Dan Farmer has been called back to St. Paul. Though still hospitalized with mental issues, Griffin Conroy points Tommy in the direction of Merritt Grieves.
John Haplin asks Rachel to return to work at The Bready. There’s been much fallout since the factory had to shut down. That’s just something that happens when you find a severed hand in a random loaf. John demands information from Rachel regarding her abduction. He believes it will help him in the search for his missing daughter. Unfortunately, Rachel doesn’t remember a thing.
The interrogation of John Haplin about missing Lauryn Ward intensifies; Tommy views the future of his relationship with Big Dave anxiously after having a nightmare; Merritt and Peggy form an unlikely bond.
Merritt and Henley scheme to take back the mysterious hammer.
