Ash wins an egg as a prize for the race, and wonders what it will hatch into. Using a Pokémon Centre as a motel, Ash leaves the egg on a desk. Team Rocket attempts to steal the egg, but Togepi wakes up, and it teleports the egg away. The next morning, Ash has to find out who stole his egg.

Ash's egg hatches into a Phanpy and almost instantly, Phanpy begins causing trouble for Ash and the group but things take a turn when Team Rocket's efforts to steal Phanpy cause the young baby elephant Pokémon to flee and side up with Team Rocket instead.

Jessie, James and Meowth find out that their contracts have expired, so they are no longer part of Team Rocket. An old woman then sends a Delibird to follow the three, so they can pay off their bills little by little. Meanwhile a Team Rocket member craves revenge on Jessie.

Team Rocket steals Lily's spell book and try to get Aipom to shed a tear without force. After beating Team Rocket, however, the spell fails and Ash is turned into a Pikachu.

Ash is restored to his human form, but Pikachu doesn't look so hot. They discover he is ill, and so a passing trainer takes them to a lake to heal electric Pokémon. They find out that a crystal is healing them, and so when Jessie and James snag it, it summons an enraged Zapdos!

When James accidentally lights a forest on fire using the Dragon Holyland's Prayer Flame, his actions cause Dragonite, the Holy Land's Guardian to snap and go mad with rage. As a result, it becomes so consumed with rage that it begins to attack everything that gets in its way while also endangering the Pokémon that live in the Holy Land as well. With help from Liza and her Charizard, Charla as well as Ash's own Charizard, Ash, Brock, Misty and Clair must find a way to stop Dragonite's rampage once and for all or risk having the Holy Lands being completely destroyed for good.

Ash finds out that a Sneasel, a Machop and a Machoke are interfering with the opening ceremony for the Silver Conference, as they were guarding the ancient fire of the legendary Ho-Oh that was required to light the torch. Then, he meets a trainer named Harrison, who says he's from the Littleroot Town in the new land of Hoenn. Ash & Harrison go to bring the fire & eventually face the guardian pokémons, including the Sneasel. They first beat Machop & Machoke. Suddenly Team Rocket comes, who wants to catch the Sneasel & make it a part of the team, but they fail again. However, Harrison introduces a Blaziken, which is unknown to others. He defeats the Sneasel with it & catches the Sneasel. Ash & Harrison successfully bring the fire & the opening ceremony starts.

Continuing the Johto League, Ash fights Macey, a fire-type trainer. Macey has a trick up her sleeve, though, she also has an Electabuzz to shock water-types. After a 3-on-3 battle, in the end Ash wins over Macey, and moves on to Round 2!

Continuing the Johto League, Ash faces off against Jackson, one of the trainers from the Legend of Thunder special. Surprisingly the battle between Ash and Jackson ends in a draw. After adding up the scores of Macey, Ash and Jackson, Ash is with the highest score, and so he moves on to the Championship Round 1 (league round 3). Ash discovers that his next battle is against Gary.

He also enters into the quarter-finals and the Top 8 champions of the Johto League. Ash discovers his next battle is against his new-met rival Harrison!

After his big victory over Gary, Ash faces of Harrison for the chance to enter the semi-finals of the Silver Conference. After a long and fierce battle, both Ash and Harrison are left with one Pokémon each. Ash is left with Charizard and Harrison is left with Blaziken. Who will be victorious and move on?

Charizard's defeat against Harrison's Blaziken. However Harrison who is now in the semi-finals, is defeated as well by his opponent. With the end of the Silver Conference, the participants head off in their separate ways. Gary has a surprise for everyone... he is going to stop being a Pokémon trainer!

Gotta Catch Ya Later!

During a pit stop in Viridian City on the way back to Pallet Town, Misty has a phonecall from her sisters that they won a world tour in a beauty contest, forcing her to take over the Cerulean Gym Leader duties during their absence. Misty realizes that Nurse Joy fixed her bike, causing her to have no excuse to continue traveling with Ash. So she sets off for her home. Meanwhile, Brock also receives an e-mail in which he was informed to get home for some important work. Brock and Misty return to their respective hometowns, and Ash returns to Pallet Town. There he gets informed that his friend Gary, whom he defeated in the conference, is setting off for a new journey. So Ash also starts planning for his next journey. Suddenly, Ash gets his eye on a Ho-oh, flying towards the region of Hoenn. Seeing this, Ash decides to go on a new journey to Hoenn, with only his Pikachu. On Hearing this, his mother gives him a ticket of the ferry to Hoenn & a brand new outfit.

Hoenn Alone!

Ash sets off for his journey to Hoenn but finds trouble in the form of Team Rocket. The episode then ends with Ash discovering the next morning that Pikachu has fallen gravely ill.
