So You Think You Can Dance - Season 6

So You Think You Can Dance, also known as SYTYCD, is a United States television reality program and dance competition airing on the Fox Broadcasting Company network. Season six premiered on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, with Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy returning as permanent judges and Cat Deeley returning to host. Adam Shankman joined the panel as a permanent judge for the first time starting with this season. Season six is the first to air during the fall season, immediately following the summer airing of season five. Live shows began airing October 26 and the season finale aired on December 16. Russell Ferguson, the first krumper to make it to the Las Vegas auditions, won the title of "America's Favorite Dancer" and the $250,000 prize. Also in the finale were Jakob Karr in second place, Kathryn McCormick in third place, Ellenore Scott in fourth place, Ashleigh Di Lello in fifth place and Ryan Di Lello in sixth place.

So You Think You Can Dance left the Wild West and traveled to Boston for the third audition city. The guest judge joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in Boston was Emmy winning choreographer Tyce Diorio.

“Audition #4”

The next stop for So You Think You Can Dance auditions was Atlanta, Georgia. Would the dancing be sizzling in Hotlanta? Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in the south was master krumper and vocabulary aficionado, Lil C.

“Audition #5”

For the first time ever, SYTYCD has hit up New Orleans, Louisiana. Since Nigel was in England obtaining an honorary doctorate, Adam Shankman and Lil C joined Mary in the Big Easy.

Salt Lake City, Utah was the last stop of the audition tour, and drew in the biggest crowd of hopefuls yet. Joining Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy at the judges' table was Mia Michaels.

“Las Vegas Round”

After traveling to six cities to find America's Favorite Dancer, 152 of the best dancers in America were at the So You Think You Can Dance semi-finals in Las Vegas. Host Cat Deeley and 152 dancers welcomed the judges: Tyce Diorio, Mia Michaels, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.

It was day two of the Las Vegas round of auditions. Less than half of the semi-finalists remained in the competition. The day started off with pop jazz choreography led by Laurieann Gibson. She's a tough choreographer, and she wasn't afraid to speak her mind to the dancers on stage.

“Meet the Top 20”

Cat Deeley stepped out on the new Hollywood set. The balconies are gone and the set resembles the one used in the Season 5 finale at Kodak Theatre. Cat introduced the judges: new permanent judge Adam Shankman, Ballroom Expert Mary Murphy, and Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe. There was a mysterious fourth chair that Cat inquired about. Nigel spun the chair around and it literally had Paula Abdul's name on it. He explained that whenever Paula wants to appear as a judge on SYTYCD, there will be a chair for her.

“Top 20 Perform”

It's here - after weeks of auditions, the Top 20 have been selected and performed in their first competition show. Due to the baseball play-offs, this episode was both a performance show and an elimination show.

“Top 16 Perform”

This week of So You Think You Can Dance mirrored last week in terms of show structure. The Top 18 dancers performed, and at the end of the show, the judges had four dancers perform solos, and then cut one girl and one guy. Starting next week, America will vote for their favorite dancers. The host with the most, Cat Deeley, introduced Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, Nigel Lythgoe, and the empty chair for Paula Abdul. Nigel announced that this season's Top 20 member Billy Bell (who left due to illness before the competition started) may enter the audition round next season starting at the Top 100 in Vegas. Billy's replacement, Brandon Dumlao, can reapply for the show next season. On to the performances!

This week of So You Think You Can Dance mirrored last week in terms of show structure. “Top 14 Perform”

It's time for America to begin voting for their favorite dancer! The Top 16 dancers were introduced by the lovely Cat Deeley in a Roland Mouret dress and Givenchy shoes. Tomorrow, the three couples with the lowest number of votes will "dance for their lives." As usual, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe waved hello. The Season 5 So You Think You Can Dancers sat in the bleachers. Nigel mentioned that tickets are now available for the Dizzy Feet Foundation's first charity event at the Kodak Theatre on November 29. “2 of 14 Voted Off”

For the very first time this season, we found out how America voted...this was So You Think You Can Dance's live results show! Tonight, the bottom six dancers performed solos and then cut one guy and one girl. For the first time since the Meet the Top 20 show, the remaining dancers took the stage as a group to perform together. This week, they performed a Dave Scott Hip Hop piece to Warrior, Pt. 2" by Lloyd Banks. This tribal themed dance was powerful and the makeup, hair, and costumes really helped set the theme.

Last week we said goodbye to Peter Sabasino and Pauline Mata, so this week only seven couples were left. The Top 14 took the stage to battle it out for America and for the judges: Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.

“2 of 12 Voted Off”

Thousands of Dance hopefuls tried out for Season 6 and within one hour, only 12 would remain. Cat Deeley brought the first two couples out on stage and it was Ashleigh & Jakob and Karen & Kevin. America agreed with the judges that Ashleigh & Jakob performed a brilliant hip hop routine, whereas Karen & Kevin's Broadway number was a little lackluster. Ashleigh & Jakob got to relax in the audience and Karen & Kevin would be dancing solos at the end of the show.

“Top 10 Perform”

The Top 12 performance show is a pivotal night because it's the last time the dancers get to prove to America that they have what it takes to be in the coveted Top 10. Cat Deeley introduced the show and looked beautiful in a blue Preen dress and Givenchy shoes. Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe were ready to watch and evaluate the remaining 12 dancers.

Tonight's show was a big one, as it determined who would make the coveted Top 10. The night started with a psychedelic Alice in Wonderland themed hip hop routine to "What's A Girl Gotta Do?" by the Basement Jaxx feat. Paloma Faith. At the end of the routine, the dancers spun a table around and there was Cat Deeley who introduced the three judges, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Lythgoe.
