The first season of Switched at Birth, an American drama television series, began airing on ABC Family on June 6, 2011 and concluded on October 22, 2012 after 30 episodes.
The one-hour scripted drama revolves around two young women who were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments.
On August 1, 2011, ABC Family announced that they were ordering more episodes for the first season of Switched at Birth, bringing the first season to a total of 30 episodes. The series continued with a winter premiere on January 3, 2012, ending on March 20, 2012, with 12 episodes. The series began airing its remaining 8 episodes for its first season, beginning September 3, 2012.
Bay Kennish discovers during a biology class that she has a rare blood type which is different from her parents. Intrigued by her new discovery, Bay convinces her parents, Kathryn and John, to visit a genetic testing facility where it’s confirmed that Bay is not their biological daughter.
The Kennish family invites Regina, Daphne and Adrianna over to breakfast, but since they’re in the middle of unpacking their new home, only Daphne goes.
When attempting to figure out a way to answer questions about their newfound living situation, Kathryn encourages her family and Regina’s family to give a vague version of the truth.

To Bay’s annoyance Daphne surprises Emmett at the East West music festival.
Bay and Emmett take a little planking adventure around the city. Meanwhile, Daphne becomes friends with Simone and considers quitting the Carlton basketball team in order to play for Buckner with Simone.
Daphne discovers the real reason Buckner wanted her to play for them.
Daphne and Bay rally together to support the same cause, while Kathryn and John hire a new lawyer.
John and Kathryn agree to invite Angelo over for dinner.
Kathryn's mom comes to town for a visit and bonds with Daphne.

While Daphne is honored with an award from Buckner, Bay must deal with Emmett's family situation.
