In the new drama The Lying Game, Emma (Alexandra Chando), is a kind-hearted foster kid who can't catch a break. She finds out she has an identical twin sister, Sutton (also played by Chando), who - unlike Emma - was adopted by wealthy parents and is seemingly living an ideal life. After their initial meeting, Sutton talks Emma into stepping into her life for a few days while she pursues a lead on their birth mother.
Two twin sisters are separated at birth, one is adopted by a rich family (Sutton) and the other (Emma) becomes the product of a broken foster system. When the girls find each other, they are determined to figure out how they were separated.
Ted Mercer (Emma’s new dad while she’s pretending to be Sutton) invites Emma to the annual father-daughter dance at the Country Club, and Emma is terrified because she possesses no ballroom dancing skills whatsoever – unlike Sutton.
Alec gives Sutton's stolen laptop back to Derek (the teenager he hired to steal it). Alec has revenge on his mind.
Alec is worried what will happen if Sutton finds out that her birth mother isn’t really dead. Something really bad happened a long time ago and both Alec and Ted have been covering it up ever since.
Not only is Emma going to her first Homecoming dance, she’s also running for Homecoming Queen against Sutton’s main rival Nisha.
After their magical night at homecoming, Ethan decides to break off his relationship with Sutton in order to be with Emma. Also, Laurel realizes that she doesn’t know much about Justin, and so she invites him and his parents to dinner with her family. When Justin avoids the invitation, Laurel discovers that he ran away from his foster parents’ home. Eduardo and Alec face off over Mads, resulting in Eduardo planning to leave town -- but before he gets far, a near-fatal car accident lands him in the hospital. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Thayer tries to tell Sutton how he feels about her.
Mads visits Eduardo in the ICU and tells him she’s worried that her father may have had something to do with the accident in order to keep them apart.
While Sutton is in prison under her sister's identity, Emma is having trouble with Travis. But with the Mercer's out of town, Laurel and Emma as Sutton are having their circle of friends at their house.
Emma tries to get Ted and Kristin to open up about the past when she overhears them fighting. Elsewhere, Sutton gains insight into Emma's former life while pretending to be her in Las Vegas.
On their seventeenth birthday Sutton returns to Phoenix to reclaim her life while Emma debates telling the Mercers about her true identity.
It's been one hard night for Emma and Ethan, and things get harder when they find out that Sutton disappeared right after the fight and that one of the Mercers cars is missing.
With Sutton still missing, Emma feels on the edge. Then a note comes for Emma via Suttons signature making her feel more so. Emma (as Sutton) goes accepts invite to The Univerty of Texas tennis program, much to Teds surprise.
Ethan, Emma, and Thayer follow a lead to Suttons dispearance. Meanwhile Laurel wows a crowds at a charity benefit.
On the night of the country club’s Black and White Ball for junior members, Emma finds herself on the outside looking in, and Ethan must put up a façade in order to protect her.
Ethan insists on helping Emma get the answers she's looking for about her twin sister. So when a tattoo sparks a memory about Sutton, Ethan pursues an explanation. But the information proves costly when Ethan heads into a situation that quickly gets out of control. Meanwhile, Mads sneaks off to see Ryan (recurring guest star MISHA CROSBY - Hollyoaks), and Laurel continues to see Justin (recurring guest star RANDY WAYNE) against her parents' wishes.
When Ethan is implicated in a serious crime, he and Sutton leave town and hide out with his father, Ben Whitehorse (recurring guest star GIL BIRMINGHAM - The Twilight Saga), on the reservation where he grew up. A burgeoning tension between father and son has Sutton playing mediator, but, despite the awkwardness, she appreciates seeing a side of Ethan that she did not know when they were together.
Ethan is still a wanted man in hiding with Sutton, leaving Emma to worry if justice - and love - will prevail. Discouraged by Dan's inability to crack the case, Emma takes it upon herself to find a way to vindicate Ethan. With the help of Mads and Thayer, they search for any lead that may help prove Ethan's innocence. Meanwhile, Ethan and Sutton's time alone in hiding together has lowered Ethan's guard.
As Emma continues to search for evidence that can help Ethan's case, she clashes with Ted and Kristin over her unwavering support of a murder suspect. Alec's relationship with the victim prevents him from taking the case himself so he assigns a star prosecutor from his firm, prompting Dan to reach out to an ex-girlfriend who is now a successful defense attorney.
Emma wants to find out what really happened on the reservation but Ethan is avoiding her and Sutton is looking to send her packing for good. Curious about his father's possible link to Derek's murder, Thayer starts to doubt Alec's alibi and begins investigating Rebecca's past.
An unexpected engagement leads to a quickly-planned wedding, causing suspicions that something is awry. Sutton encourages Emma to show Kristin what they found in Rebecca's house.
