The third season of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, an American television series created by Brenda Hampton, debuted on the ABC Family television network on Monday, June 7, 2010 at 8:00 PM.
After its second season's mid-season premiere was successful, ABC Family announced on January 12, 2010, that the show would be renewed for a third season, consisting of 26 episodes, the most episodes in a season to date. Season 3 will begin with 14 episodes broadcast before going on a hiatus until March 2011.
Adrian tells Ben they will not have a child together because the pregnancy test she took was incorrect and she just got her period. Ben thinks Adrian’s lying about it and confronts her. She insists that she’s not pregnant when Ben admits that he doesn’t want to have a child with her, but she does call for counseling at the local women’s free clinic.
While Adrian has morning sickness and word gets out she is still pregnant, Amy and Ashley aren’t speaking because Ashley told her parents that Amy is on the pill. Ashley skips school and spends the day with Adrian commiserating about what she’s going to do about the baby. Speaking of Ash, Ricky tells Ashley that Griffen’s cousin Grant is transferring to Ashley’s school to be closer to her!
Leo is furious at Ben for being the father of Adrian’s baby and says that he expects him to treat Adrian the way he treated Amy. Ben thinks this means that he might have to propose to Adrian. Ben confronts Adrian again to ask if she’s pregnant, but she tells him she needs a few days to discuss it.
Adrian confronts her mother and tells her the news that she already knows: Adrian is pregnant. Cindy promises to support her daughter in whatever decision she makes. Later, Ruben and Cindy get into an argument over the thought of Adrian having an abortion. Ruben tells Adrian that he his is not going to let her terminate the pregnancy. At the end of the episode, Tom (dressed in a dashing tuxedo) arrives at Adrian’s home and proposes to her!
Band geeks are spreading rumors through the school that Amy is pregnant again. Ricky is especially furious with these rumors and insists they aren't true. Later, when Ricky and Ashley are alone, they kiss! Ricky backs away and hurries out of the room. Meanwhile, in New York City, Bristol Palin shows up at Amy’s dorm room and Amy finds out that all of the girls in the music program are teen mothers.
While Adrian waits at the clinic with her mother, Ricky’s mom Margaret stops by the clinic to pick up some paper work and notices Adrian. The two of them meet and Adrian tells her that she might not want to go through with the abortion after all. Ben meets Adrian at the clinic and she tells him that she has decided to have the baby.
Ricky and Ashley have an enormous fight because they are trying to resist falling for each other. They’ve been through a lot together and their relationship is deeper than most teenagers. Anne and George overhear the argument and tell Ricky to go home for a few days and they will take care of John. They broach Ashley about the relationship and Anne really hits the point home that you must think with your head as well as your heart. Ashley decides that at this time, they can be nothing more than friends.
Everyone is worried that Amy is not taking the news about Ben and Adrian so well. Meanwhile, Anne agrees to go on a date with George and George has Donovan help him plan a romantic evening. George pays $1,000 to reserve the back room of a fancy restaurant for his date with Anne. But Anne has to go take care of Mimsy and cancels on George! Luckily, George convinces Ashley (and John and Robbie) to go with him instead. While they’re there, George talks to Ashley about her feelings for Ricky.
Ashley talks to Griffin about her complicated relationship with Ricky, and the kiss between them that has caused Amy to stop calling. Ashley also wishes that Grant would call her again. Instead, Griffin sets Grant up with Grace, who is looking for a new date. With this plan in motion, Grace also plans to set Griffin up herself, with a young man named Peter. At Grace’s get-together, Griffin meets Peter, who tries to admit that he’s straight, but Griffin knows this is not the case.
It’s the last day of school, and Ben is still fretting over not being able to talk to Amy. Adrian shows up and sees all the pictures of Amy that Ben has in his locker, and helps him clean them out. They have a small argument over Ricky’s position in all of this, and Adrian reluctantly invites Ben to her upcoming sonogram before walking off annoyed.
At the butcher shop, Ben and Ricky are having an argument over Amy—Ben is angry that Ricky went over to New York, and Ricky is annoyed that Ben is still so obsessed. Eventually, the two get physical, and Ben is subsequently fired by Bunny.
Griffin visits Ashley, wanting to take her to breakfast, but she’s not in the mood as she’s still bitter about Ricky. Meanwhile, still in New York, Amy is having regrets about guilt-tripping Ricky for forgetting her birthday, and she leaves a long voicemail for him. He gets it, and reveals to her family that they had all forgotten about her birthday. Ricky then calls up Ken for therapy, and they discuss Ricky’s desire to find love through sex with multiple women, and how it can be a problem.
Ricky and Amy are in the Juergens’ kitchen, and Amy reveals that she’s suspicious that Ricky slept around while she was away.
Anne suspects George of cheating again, and they realize that they are staying together for the kids, not because of love. Meanwhile, George, Amy, and Ricky are worried that Ashley has run away, but she winds up hiding in Ricky’s bedroom to try and pressure him into sex.
Adrian and Ben find out that they are having a little girl. They are elated – as are their parents. Ben wants to ask Adrian to marry him but he‘s afraid she‘ll say no.
Ricky tries to have his custody agreement declare he cannot live with his mother Nora, but the mediator in Amy and Ricky‘s custody agreement says that sometimes even our parents need parents.
Margaret, Ricky‘s foster mom, lays down the ground rules for his birthmother living at their home.
Amy is upset that Adrian and Ben are getting married and laments to her mother and sister.
Ricky is still reeling from Amy asking him to marry her. Everyone around him is pushing him to give her an answer but he‘s not ready to deal with the consequences just yet.
Ashley is enraged that Amy is moving in with Ricky. George isn‘t much happier because he knows she‘s doing it because she wants to keep up with Ben and Adrian.
Adrian and Grace shopping for wedding dresses and Adrian contemplates getting married in a church. Then Adrian shares with her best friend that she and Ben had sex again -- and that she loved it.
Grace‘s mom made invitations for Adrian‘s shower, but Amy and Grace are stumped as to who to invite.
