Just a few weeks after the new poster for Underworld: Blood Wars debuted, Sony Pictures has unveiled the third trailer, packed with brand new footage from this action sequel, arriving in theaters early next year. The war between vampires and the lycans (werewolves) continues in this fifth installment of the Underworld franchise, which is shaping up to be its most explosive entry yet. As you can see in this trailer, while this war has been waged for quite some time, it's still just getting started.

The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, Underworld: Blood Wars follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice. It remains to be seen how much more footage Sony Pictures will release as we get closer to the January 6, 2017 release date.

As of now, the action sequel will be going up against The Weinstein Company's horror reboot Amityville: The Awakening in the first weekend of the new year. While January is typically devoid of box office blockbusters, that may change this year, with a number of high-profile titles arriving later that month. Paramount will unveil Monster Trucks on January 13 alongside STX's The Bye Bye Man and Open Road Films' Sleepless. The next two weeks bring action sequels such as XXX: The Return of Xander Cage (January 20) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (January 27).

Kate Beckinsale leads a cast that also includes Tobias Menzies (Outlander, Rome) and Lara Pulver (Sherlock), who will play new Lycan leader named Marius and a fiercely ambitious vampire named Semira, respectively. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) is returning as Vampire elder Thomas, along with James Faulkner (Game of Thrones), Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Bradley James (Damien), Daisy Head (Fallen) and newcomer Clementine Nicholson. The cast is rounded out by Oliver Stark, Clementine Nicholson, James Faulkner, Alicia Vela-Bailey, Trent Garrett, Brian Caspe and Peter Andersson.

Anna Foerster directs Underworld 5 from a script by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest), based on original characters created by Kevin Grevioux, Len Wiseman and Danny McBride. Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi, Richard S. Wright and David Kern are producing, along with Len Wiseman, who directed the first Underworld movie.
