Patrick Tatopoulos (Underworld 3: The Rise of The Lycans) has signed on to direct the sci-fi fantasy adventure New Babylon for Hydra Entertainment.

The story is set in a futuristic Middle East, where a war between angels and demons leads to the building of a Tower of Babel. In the Bible, the Tower of Babel story was told in the Book of Genesis, where humanity united in Shinar after the Great Flood, to build a tower that would reach all the way up to heaven.

Here's what Patrick Tatopoulos had to say about the project in a statement.

"We have some very ambitious ideas for the world, characters and story of this movie, and I can already see that the innovative virtual design and story development techniques being employed at Hydra are going to make all the difference in exploring those concepts and putting them on screen in a visually stunning way."

David LoPresti is writing the screenplay, based on an original idea by Hydra Entertainment co-founder Joshua Wassung. The company, founded by Wassung, Maleficent director Robert Stromberg, Avatar production designer Dylan Cole and Chris Edwards, is focused on integrating top-notch production design, storyboards and pre-vizualization into the writing process. Robert Stromberg and Chris Edwards will executive produce, with Joshua Wassung, Nathan Santell and Joel Newton producing.

Aside from his work as a director, Patrick Tatopoulos has also served as a production designer on big-budget projects such as 300: Rise of an Empire and Total Recall.
