UPDATE: 9/24/10 11:30 AM PST A few of the directors mentioned in the story below have responded, and it seems one of them didn't even know he was on this short list. JoBlo spoke with Matt Reeves, who said he was "surprised" to learn he was being considered to direct Superman:

"I really have no idea if any of that is true. It's certainly an amazing project, but I would be surprised..."

Duncan Jones also tweeted a response this morning that was later removed:

"About Superman... I'm going to say something really cheesy; Can't talk about it, but an honor to be on the list. Interesting times!"

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further Superman news as soon as we have more information.

Original Story: Producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are hoping to start production on their rebooted Superman movie soon, which is being financed by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. According to Deadline, Christopher Nolan is actively seeking a director to resurrect the Man of Steel, and he has his eye on some mighty big talent.

The five directors currently at the top of Nolan's shortlist include:

Some of these directors are already commited to future projects, which would make them an unlikely choice. Jonathan Liebesman is set to start work on Clash of the Titans 2 soon, and will most likely not get the Superman directing job.

Christopher Nolan is meeting with all of the directors, though, and he will make an announcement sometime in the next few weeks. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are moving fast on the project, as they stand to lose certain rights to the iconic character in 2013 after a judge ruled favorably on behalf of Superman creator Jerry Siegel's heirs.

We will update you with more information as soon as an official statement about Superman is made public.
