Recently Empire Online had a chance to talk with Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings: Return of the King) about the upcoming movie version of the best-selling PC game Doom. Set countless years in the future and told in the hyper- kinetic, kamikaze style, the science fiction action adventure Doom takes the viewer to the far corners of the galaxy with a fully-realized vision of a dark and disturbing future.

“It’s relentless as through the course of the film, the hunters become the hunted. It’s not a film for bedwetters.” states Urban who plays John Grimm.

While Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the platoon’s leader, Sarge, and is in the forefront of the marketing campaign, Urban certainly makes his mark with the Grimm character. “They were offering me the chance to be the Doom guy,” continued Urban, “John Grimm is a character who’s really running away from his past. He’s a child prodigy of scientists and turned his back on all of that and chooses to go around killing things and blowing things up as an act of rebellion. And through the course of the film, he confronts his inner demons in order to triumph against all odds. At the end of the day, the story is about the birth of a superhero, if you will.”

Setting itself apart from other “videogame” movies, Doom is R-rated, and extremely violent, and maybe best of all, it’s got FPS (First Person Shooter). What this means is that we will be “treated” to seeing the action “through Grimm’s eyes."

“In some ways, it makes cinematic history in that, for the first time, the audience becomes the hero of the film,” said Urban. “When we go into FPS, the audience is doing the rampage, the audience is doing the work and that is so cool. It’s insane!”
