Justified star Walton Goggins may have to get used to wearing a blue jumpsuit for his next big role. Per Deadline, the actor has reportedly been cast as a lead in the live-action Fallout series that's currently in development at Prime Video. The show is a direct adaptation of the bestselling video game franchise and comes from Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's Kilter Films. Nolan is on board to direct the pilot episode.

Full details haven't been revealed about Goggins' character, but he is believed to be playing a Ghoul. Gamers may know that in Fallout, ghouls are humans given a ghoulish look after being mutated from prolonged exposure to radiation amid the Great War. He is said to be a main character and as of now, Goggins is the first name that's been officially announced for the cast. With this lead in place, chances are we will be hearing more casting announcements soon.

Amazon Studio and Kilter Films are developing the Fallout series in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Nolan and Joy are executive producing alongside Athena Wickham for Kilter Films, Todd Howard for Bethesda Game Studios, and James Altman for Bethesda Softworks. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are serving as showrunners on the series.

Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time,” Joy and Nolan said when the series was ordered at Amazon Studios. “Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we’re incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios.”

Walton Goggins, who lately can be seen in the hit HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, is acclaimed for his famous role on the FX series Justified. For his work on the show, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. His other notable roles include the shows The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, The Unicorn, and Predators, as well as the films Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, Tomb Raider, and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Fallout Is Set in a Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland

Fallout's title refers to a nuclear fallout, as the story is set in a world ravaged by nuclear warfare. With the Great War starting in the 1950s, much of the imagery and music is themed to fit the era as survivors traverse through a wasteland filled with people, mutants, and a variety of creatures looking to bring them harm. Fans have been wanting a live-action adaptation for years before the gears finally got turning on this adaptation at Prime Video.

Perhaps what helped Fallout make some traction was video game adaptations rising in popularity in recent years. Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu were both pretty big hitters at the box office while Mortal Kombat pulled in the highest viewership of every major movie released to HBO Max in 2021. The time might be right for Fallout to get into the mix, especially with so many fans spending years waiting for this adaptation.

Fallout does not have a release date set, but the series will begin production in 2022.
