"In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins this own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet."
As has been the case with the previous two installments of the franchise, a totally new set of human cast members has been shuffled in. Judy Greer, Steve Zahn and Woody Harrelson have all joined the cast of War for the Planet of the Apes, but some very important cast members are returning. Max Lloyd-Jones is returning as the ape Blue Eyes, Terry Notary is back as Rocket but most importantly, Andy Serkis has come back to reprise his now very iconic role as Caesar the ape. At this point it would be inconceivable to do the movies without him, so fans should be happy to see the motion capture pioneer back.
2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took a 15-year jump forward in time, following the events portrayed in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Director Matt Reeves has stated that War for the Planet of the Apes is going to take place shortly after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, without a major time jump like happened last time. That would make sense given what happened at the end of the last movie, as there seems to be quite a bit to settle in the current timeline that has been established.
War for the Planet of the Apes is written by Mark Bomback and Matt Reeves. The movie is set for a prime-time summer release on July 14, 2017. Be sure to check out the first trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes for yourself below.
