Gabriel Chavarria, who stars in Universal's upcoming drama Lowriders, is being eyed for one of the two main human roles in 20th Century Fox's Planet of the Apes 3. We reported back in May that the the sequel is now entitled War of the Planet of the Apes, and this movie title has now been confirmed by Deadline. No details were given about his character, but the role was compared to James Franco's role in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The War of the Planet of the Apes title certainly make sense, since last year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes teased an all-out war between the apes and the humans. 20th Century Fox has already set a July 14, 2017 release date for Planet of the Apes 3, which currently has that release date all to itself, although there is plenty of competition around it. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set for release on July 7, 2017, while Universal's Pitch Perfect 3 is set for release on July 21, 2017.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is returning to direct from a script he co-wrote alongside Mark Bomback (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), with production set to begin this October in Vancouver. As production starts in just a few months, we'll surely start hearing more about additional casting in the near future. Matt Reeves has already stated that there won't be a significant time jump in this movie sequel, with the story set to take place shortly after the events of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The filmmaker has also stated that he believes there are several more stories that can be told about Andy Serkis' Caesar character in this timeline, before the events of the original classic Planet of the Apes. It isn't known if 20th Century Fox has plans for any future sequels beyond Planet of the Apes 3, but it wouldn't be surprising, given how popular the franchise has become. 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes took in $481 million worldwide at the box office from a $93 million production budget, with last year's sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes earning $708 million from a $170 million budget.

Gabriel Chavarria's Lowriders is in post-production and doesn't have a release date set at this time. The actor stars alongside Demián Bichir, Theo Rossi, Yvette Monreal, Melissa Benoist, Eva Longoria and Tony Revolori. The actor's other credits include Freedom Writers, A Better Life and roles in TV shows such as Gang Related and Aquarius.
