Last week, fans of unnecessary long-in-the-tooth comedy sequels, like the disappointing Zoolander 2 and Anchorman 2, became mildly enthusiastic when they heard Wedding Crashers 2 might actually happen. While the follow-up to the 2005 blockbuster smash hasn't been officially confirmed, the script was recently turned in. And the original director is expected to return.

Isla Fisher, wife of comedy icon Sacha Baron Cohen, made waves last week when she revealed that Wedding Crashers 2 was officially happening. How did she know? Because Vince Vaughn told her to get ready. But there was no official word about the sequel until today. Deadline claims to have the real scoop as to what is going on.

Right now, Wedding Crashers 2 is nowhere near getting a green light from New Line Studios. But that doesn't mean this is another lofty rumor. The main cast, led by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, need to sign off creatively on the project. And getting them all back will be pricey. Negotiations may be happening very soon, though, as Evan Susser & Van Robichaux have just turned in the script.

New Line wants to bring original director David Dobkin, with Isla Fisher and Rachel McAdams also wanted back along with the two male leads. At this sage in the game, it isn't known if other featured cast members such as Will Ferrell, Bradley Cooper or Christopher Walken will be back. No script details have leaked, so it's unclear if there is even room for their characters in this new story.

New Line reportedly went after Evan Susser & Van Robichaux for the sequel after they turned in their script for the upcoming comedy Fist Fight, starring Ice Cube and Charlie Day. It is a remake of the 80s cult classic 3 O'Clock High, with the twist that two teachers are gearing up for an after school boxing match instead of two students.

Apparently the writing gig was open, the writing duo pitched their idea, and this won them the job. The original Wedding Crashers was a bigger hit than expected, pulling in $285 million worldwide off a small $40 million budget. As of now, there is no release date set for Wedding Crashers 2. But if everything continues to play out as is, it will likely be in theaters spring 2018.
