It was an explosive ending to the third season of What We Do in the Shadows, leaving fans eager for more. Fortunately, a season 4 of hit vampire mockumentary series has already been approved and, indeed, production has already begun. Season 3 ended with the roommates scattered across the globe. Still reeling from Simon’s untimely death, the remaining vampires decided to go their own ways. Nadja and Lazlo prepared to go to London to take their place on the Supreme Vampire Council and Nandor decided to travel the world, “Eat, Prey Love” style. He was going to leave Guillermo, but Guillermo challenged him to a fight and eventually subdued him with a crucifix, earning his approval to travel with him and an offer to eventually turn him.

Before the trip, Gulermo went to prepare Nadja and Lazlo’s coffins for their trip. In a surprising turn of events, Lazlo kidnapped Guillermo and put him in Lazlo’s coffin, sending Guillermo to London with Nadja. The final few moments show that Lazlo went to pay his respects to Colin and found Colin reborn as a child. Meanwhile, Nandor waits forlornly for Guillermo before finally boarding the train alone. Here's everything we know about What We Do in the Shadows' upcoming season 4.

The Plot of Season 4

Mark Proksch has confirmed that he will be returning as Colin but, through the magic of CGI and prosthetics, Colin will be remaining a child. Lazlo will be attempting to parent the newborn Colin. In an interview with IndieWire, Proksch stated that they will be exploring the question of whether Colin is destined to become an energy vampire or is capable of change.

“Is he going to grow up to be exactly what he was before? Or is there a chance he can avoid that fate and mature into something brand new that’s maybe not an energy-draining form?"

With Lazlo gone, Nadja will be left dealing with the Supreme Vampire Council alone. Guillermo’s absence from Nandor’s trip spells a delay in his transition to a vampire as well as upcoming tension in their relationship. Guillermo’s troubles do not end there either. Paul Simms has confirmed that season 4 will be introducing Guillermo’s family in a way “that will make him particularly restless.” Simms has also stated that if Guillermo has Van Helsing’s DNA then so does the rest of his family, which spells trouble for his vampire friends. And perhaps with the focus on Guillermo’s family, we’ll get some background information and maybe even some flashbacks of his famous ancestor.

Meanwhile, Nandor will be traveling the world which opens the door for expanding the supernatural universe, something production had confirmed was a plan for this season at the New York 2021 Comic Con. Simms stated that there will be one episode, in particular, that is “probably the most ambitious episode we’ve done as far as seeing the other creatures of the supernatural world.”

The Pandemic Will Not Be Written Into the Show

As the show enters the year 2020, fans have been wondering if the pandemic will play a large part in the fourth season. However, Guillermo actor Harvey Guillen states that this will not be the case. He said in an interview with SyFy Wire:

“We’ve created a world where people escaped to watch our show. There’s no reason to make those waters murky. We know what we’re doing.”

Nadja actress Natasia Demetricu agreed.

“I think that’s what the beauty of the show is. You don’t have to pay attention to current affairs, because they are very self-involved people who have lived through every president, every regime, every pandemic. They’d just say, 'Oh, this one was over so quickly.'”

So perhaps the pandemic will be playing out in the background while our main characters remain oblivious. However, apparently, the Suez Channel incident will be playing a part although in a less dire situation.

Everything Else We Know

No official release date has yet been issued. However, the season 4 renewal was announced before season 3 even began streaming which could indicate a 2022 release date. Historically, the seasons have come out earlier in the year, with seasons 1 and 2 releasing in the spring, but filming complications due to COVID, pushed the third season back to a fall release and it is highly likely season four will follow suit. That being said, the series wrapped filming of season 4 last week, so it's only a matter of time before more concrete information, promotional materials, and even a trailer are released.
