Back in the summer of 2007, moviegoers who went to see the blockbuster hit Transformers were baffled by a mysterious trailer attached to the film which featured only a glimpse of some mysterious footage and a release date, which turned out to be the first trailer for the J.J. Abrams-produced film Cloverfield. Three years later, it seems that Abrams is up to his old tricks again and, according to Hitfix, we will see another mysterious trailer for a secret J.J. Abrams film attached to prints of Iron Man 2 this weekend.

We reported last week that Abrams and Steven Spielberg were collaborating on a new film project, but the site believes the trailer will not be for this film. Instead, they are reporting that the film is being called Super 8 and it is "rumored to be a Cloverfield sequel," although it was believed that Abrams would not be directing this film himself.

Strict security measures are already being taken to ensure the trailer isn't leaked before the film's release. Here's an image of an instructional letter given to theater owners for this weekend's Iron Man 2 release, which reveals that the reel with the trailers won't even be unlocked until Thursday afternoon.

At 2:15PM PST today, Vulture has now chimed in on this story with some new information which reveals the film is certainly tied to Cloverfield.

"Insiders familiar with the trailer tell us that it shows a bunch of kids who are shooting a movie with a Super 8 camera in the seventies or eighties. When they develop the film, they notice that there's an alien creature in the frame. Our sources also say that Super 8 is absolutely connected to 2008's Cloverfield (possibly a prequel, but not a sequel)."

The site also wasn't sure if the film would be a Cloverfield sequel or a prequel but we'll be sure to keep you posted with any new information about this new film and trailer as soon as more information comes in.
