Star Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold have been sharing a number of new Logan photos with fans through social media, some of which are just cryptic images from the set with no context given, while one other image gave us our first look at Patrick Stewart as Professor X. Today we have one of each, with James Mangold offering our first look at Stephen Merchant as the mutant Caliban, while Hugh Jackman unveils another mystery photo that shows a sign for Highway 62 in El Paso, Texas. We've seen hints at the El Paso setting in previous photos, but despite the growing number of images arriving, we still don't have any confirmed plot details.

While James Mangold's Twitter photo doesn't explicitly state that Stephen Merchant is Caliban, there have been rumors insisting as such, with some of the details from previous reports teased in recent photos. One of those images featured the words "Where are all the mutants?" scrawled onto a restroom stall door. That photo debuted just days after plot rumors claimed the story is set in the year 2024, where mutant births are in a sharp decline. And the government doesn't have any answers as to why this is happening.

That same report revealed Stephen Merchant is in fact playing Caliban, a mutant who was recently seen in the 1980s-set X-Men: Apocalypse, played by Tómas Lemarquis. In this story, he will help Hugh Jackman's Logan take care of Professor X, who has fallen ill and, at times, can't even remember who Logan is. The actor came aboard this superhero project in April, alongside Richard E. Grant, whose character has yet to be confirmed. Perhaps Richard E. Grant will be the next actor featured in these character portraits displayed by James Mangold. Earlier today, the director also answered a question from a fan on Twitter, where he revealed that the Western genre influences much of what he does as a filmmaker, including Logan.

We've seen a number of these mysterious photos since the official title was unveiled with the first poster earlier this month. That poster image featured Logan's clawed hand grasping the hand of a young girl, which many believe belongs to X-23, a.k.a. Laura Kinney. We have previously seen set photos with Hugh Jackman and an unidentified young girl, who many have speculated is in fact X-23. While the identity of the girl whose hand Logan is holding has not been confirmed, sources claim that she is a young mutant, but they wouldn't specify whether it's X-23 or not. The story is set in the year 2024, and that this story is darker than any of the previous X-Men or Wolverine movies.

It has been rumored that this story is at least partially based on the Old Man Logan comics. Recent rumors claim Logan is growing sick, causing his powers to fade, and sometimes, he doesn't even fully heal from his injuries. Director James Mangold even posted a script page that revealed that Logan has turned to booze to ease his pain, which isn't terribly surprising since he is often seen drinking in the X-Men and Wolverine movies, with this report adding that he "looks bad" and "drinks a lot." For work, Logan has landed a job driving a Chrysler 300 limousine, which would explain the limousine seen in early set photos, riddled with bullet holes. There is reportedly a "government-type program" known as Transigen, which is "turning mutant children into killing machines." This girl Logan mentors is said to have two adamantium claws, instead of three. Take a look at these new Logan photos below, as we inch closer and closer to the March 3, 2017 release date.
