Following the edge of the seat cliffhanger of a season finale, Yellowjackets has gone out with a bang, leaving fans eagerly waiting for the upcoming season.

The conclusion has raised the hype for the show to an extent where the premiere viewership of Yellowjackets is breaking records, becoming the most-watched first season on Showtime in six years. The season finale itself brought in 1.3 million viewers across the Showtime platforms on premiere night, while the penultimate episode brought in 1.4 million views. According to Showtime, the Yellowjackets finale more than doubled its premiere viewership.

Currently, Yellowjackets has averaged more than 5 million weekly viewers, the highest for a freshman series on the network in almost six years, since Billions in early 2016. It is also the second-most streamed series in Showtime's history, right behind Dexter: New Blood, which brought in 3 million viewers for its finale.

Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, the show also holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and has already achieved critical acclaim. Yellowjackets received nominations for Best Drama Series and Best New Series at the Writer's Guild of America Awards and has been nominated for Best Drama Series at the Critics Choice Awards. Melanie Lynskey has been nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series at the Critics Choice Awards as well.

Yellowjackets Delivers More than What It Promises the Viewers

The show's success is hardly surprising, as it delivers more than just a survival horror with psychological elements. The show also offers a coming-of-age drama as the characters try to move on with their lives while their past trauma haunts them at every turn. It even presents the story beautifully, as it follows a team of wildly talented high school soccer players who become the survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness in 1996.

Taking a lot of its material from William Golding's acclaimed Lord of The Flies, the show chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans. Juxtaposed with this are the snippets of these characters in 2021, as they currently try to navigate through their lives. Yellowjackets delivers what it promises with a rather intriguing premise, and maybe even a bit more. Not to mention brilliant performances by a stellar cast, featuring the likes of Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Christina Ricci, and many more. Perhaps the full scope of the story could not have been explored if creators had stuck to the original plan for the project: to make it a feature film with Warner Bros. Pictures.
